Well i`ve bought it...will have much questions. Its arriving on Tuesday after a 700km trip down our coastline. Can`t describe the feeling of owning one of these bad boys. Lusted after it as a teenager but have never owned one. Will take out the engine and give to someone that knows what they doing. Maybe get away with a hone and new rings..but we`ll see. WIll post more pics once it arrives. The bike came from Germany recently where it spent all that time in storage (last ran in 1992), so never registered on our roads. Guy I got it from is a Brit who has his hands full restoring a TZR125...as well as sorting out his current bike`s blown motor...he`s only had it 2 weeks with a plan of restoring it but finances caught up with him. Not going to sleep much until its in my garage. Some more pics what the guy sent me.

I see Yambits has the parts..even a crank if need be.

Do you think there could be rust in the engine..reboring is ok but what about the crank?

I can get this bike for ZAR20,000. Its been standing for 20years under a sheet and very original, no rot..no dents..no cracks. Bit of surface rust and motor is locked up from standing. Wat u guys think?

i have filled as per spec on the casing. I think changing out the window would be best bet sometime in the future.

My next tank I want to do a MS Primer, Base coat and Clear coat over it. This will be my first time doing it this way as I`ve only used 2K paints so far. I was wanting to apply decals then clear coat over them. I`m having rather expensive vinyl decals made and don`t want to ruin them. So my question has anybody had experience doing this..can the paint damage the decals?..would appreciate any tips so I don`t make a mess of it?

My window for checking oil has gone opaque. Any ideas how I can be sure level is correct? Pity they didn`t use a dipstick on this model.

I`ve been a bit of an idiot by deciding to shorten my XT250 chain. Grinded the pin flush with the link but after some coaxing with a hammer and sharp object, couldnt get the pin out to remove a link. After struggling with it just decided to fit the chain back on the bike, but am wondering how safe it is now.

Gave the engine to mechanic friend to do the rings, hone and timing..so have to presume its ok. Some fuel in the cylinder and quickstart in the intake got her going. I broke the gasket between the carb and cylinder when I installed it which I`m sure must definitely be causing hard starting (tested with some quickstart in that area which caused revs to rise)..so will replace it. Otherwise its maintaining a reasonable idle but revving is erratic (revs stay high and come down very slowly..most likely the gasket).

She has new rings/plug/fuel filter/oil/carb clean..you name it. Went for a start after quite a long restore period and not getting any joy. Getting spark but can`t be sure about compression as I don`t have a test kit. Also wondering about the carb..maybe must come off again for another clean. Tomorrow will try some fuel in the cylinder to see if she wakes up.

Ok..Adjusted cable all the way in by the grip and its better. So would think I gave some slack to allow slide to go all the way down.
