  1. That`s what I was thinking. Manual indicates fuel level must be 3-5mm under top of bowl edge, funny thing is it looked ok. I`ll test it again with carb on the bike and bike running to see if its still right. Another concern might be the choke circuit..best way I`ve heard of testing it is activate choke with bike running and see if it dies.
  2. Ok I`m stumped..did a test like in the manual but with carb off the bike. The float level looks ok.
  3. On the XT500 the measurement is 22+-2.5mm. Don`t know the 250 though. Measured it at around 20 with this method.
  4. Ok time to check out this carb..got it off today (real pig getting this carb off - everything in the way). Stripped The accelerator pump diaphragm..cant see any tears or holes But I notice something here..look how far the tang on the floats bent down (never seen one bent so far down). Logic says this will cause bowl to underfill which will lead to the hard starting. Is there a way to check float height like on the DT`s with carb off? as the manual has some weird procedure with a tube on overflow..carb must be on the bike and it must be running.
  5. The manual indicates timing should be checked after an engine overhaul. How likely is it for timing to be out after a top and bottom end overhaul?
  6. Well bill supposed to be around 530 pounds all in, which I am happy to spend as I will know what I have. I am irritated he did not come to me sooner as I see Yambits have conrod kits available which includes big end bearings for this model (and I`ll bet they have stock). Going a bit crazy here waiting for this engine but will try relax and keep myself busy with the XT250 hard starting so long. When this engine arrives I will be opening some champagne.
  7. You not kidding..can hardly walk after all that kicking..XT500 easier to start. I would think it has some sort of fueling problem. Gonna climb into that carb soon..would just like to get Elsie out the way first.
  8. Was informed by my engine guy the reason for holdup with big end bearings. Japan have no stock of this model..only the powervalve..which takes a different size. So Yamaha had to make bearings up..they are done and in process of being shipped. Will be lucky to see my engine this week.
  9. Removed plug for inspection today as bike takes about 40 kicks to start. Still gonna checkout carb but thought would check plug gap..its within spec.
  10. Exhaust cleanup today..paint tomorrow. Some new blood for Elsie. New plugs..these gaps were considerably out..by 0.3mm.
  11. Was going thru here and see I didn`t post a pic of how bad left hand carb was. Slide was so badly stuck it took 2 days soaking in vinegar to free it. How it looks now
  12. ok got that filter off..was pretty stuck in there. Tap stripped as well..going to leave everything soaking in some fresh fuel overnight and blow it all out in the morning again.
  13. Yep..lever was off..that seal in there needs to be replaced. can only think that filter on there causing a blockage. It has been sitting 20 years.
  14. No fuel getting thru here. When open its not pouring out..only few drops coming out if I shake the tank vigorously. Wondering about removing this filter on here as you can see its damaged(intend to fit inline filters). All my other bikes these in-tank filters have fallen off so I always do inline filters. There`s about 2 litres in the tank..so should I need more fuel in there? I have stripped the petcock and blown out everything with compressed air. The tank has been lined. Surely with 2 litres in, fuel should pour out when on reserve as with my other bikes.
  15. Other side seals and new pads in. Bled brakes again and got good pressure. Keen to test them. These are SBS pads by the way.
  16. Having fun with brakes today..started another thread as after 2 hours of pumping was getting no joy out of bleeding the brakes and started wondering about condition of master cylinder. I still needed to push one caliper`s piston out to change seals. After leaving awhile fluidseemed to find its way through and things started working..it also helped I think to remove bleed screws completely when pumping. So one side has new seals..will do remaining side tomorrow and bleed again.
  17. good news..left it for awhile after a million pumps and when I got back noticed pool of fluid under one caliper..and reservoir was empty..loosened bleed screws completely and fluid started pumping through. Pushed the piston out so I can change seals. Must have been battling with air lock as you say.
  18. I removed calipers to replace seals. Connected everything up again..added brake fluid and started pumping to bleed but getting no resistance. Level not doing anything either. Could master cylinder be a problem?
  19. Haven't heard anything. Don`t know the guy, just did him a favour by spreading the word.
  20. Thanks Airhead..was considering some red paint and a very fine brush. Black polish also always works well.
  21. Ok..new brake pads on order. Been busy cleaning up footpegs. Rear Front..new rubbers from Yambits And mirrors Still waiting for that damn engine..big end bearings holding things up now..apparently there was a problem with shipping.
  22. Someone in our local club bought a bike from the UK over the internet only to find out it was a scam. Ive included some details here in case anyone might know something. Bike is a 1969: Velocette Venom The ad: John, Here is every restorers dream! A nicely dry-stored Velocette Venom 500cc that has been sleeping since 1976! This example is in need of total restoration. Having said that the engine does turn over nicely and feels good. The gearbox selects all gears OK. I doubt there would be much trouble in getting this bike running and back on the road as is but really, to be safe I really recommend a complete strip down and thorough clean through. All alloy engine - no fin damage Petrol tank dry stored very clean inside. Both side & centre stands fitted and in good condition. Brakes free and feel OK. Frame and engine numbers, RS 12846 & VM3249 are the matching factory originals. The bike was supplied to Bill Lomas Motorcycles in Milford, Derby on 2nd September 1959; It was registered on 10-02-1960 and sold to a buyer in Chesterfield, Derby on 14th Feb 1960. I'm asking £4,000 GBP and I will be glad to arrange shipping from the UK. Payment will be accepted via Bank Transfer only. Many thanks again and regards, Seller details: Oscar Davis Shore Rd Freiston Boston, Lincolnshire PE22 0NF, UK. Bank details: Bank Name: Nationwide Bank (Swindon) Account Name: D.M.
