Checked the oil level before I even started her! Had a car seize once cos of a faulty oil level light. The air filter stops bits of dust etc from entering the carb. Not sure why it would be black unless there had been some unspent fuel back fire or just not changed in a long time. I couldn't check this on mine cos it was a new plug, but the condition of the plug can tell a lot about the condition of the engine. In car Haynes manuals I've had, there has been a page showing pictures of spark plugs in various states. Also need to keep check on brake fluid in the window on the handle bar. Any other tips I find out I'll share!

No idea on the thread - can't see for sure without taking them off. Will find out soon enough though - the link you sent me looks like a good buy, even if I have to replace them in a year or so when the cheap Chinese chrome comes off! I've cancelled my Haynes manual, taking too long to come! I'll pick one up in WHSmiths when I'm next near one. Fingers crossed there's nothing else really wrong with her! The fuel leak seems to have stopped now regardless of where I have the fuel switch. Think I'll let the fuel run through til I need to use reserve so I know how many miles I get! I'll let you know. If our bikes are very different on consumption it could point at something wrong.

Interesting about the choke. Mine doesn't stay on either! Not had to use it yet even at -2 to start first thing, only when I stopped in snow I had to use it, after the engine had warmed up?!

Any other damage to the bike when you dropped it? Mines got a small dent in the tank which I assume is from a previous owner doing just that! The chrome on both my mirrors is a little apologetic to say the least so I'll be changing both mine at some point. Along with a few other bits and pieces as and when I can (2 young kids take priority!)

I picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Drove it home in light snow at about 11 at night. That was a very long 2 hours. It's a 94. Drives nice. Sits at 50 all day long and can stretch it to 60 if needed! I had her up to 65 the other day downhill!! I think the clutch may be in need of replacing or just cleaning the plates off though as she slips a bit in 5th. How's yours? Do you notice the indicators flash at a higher speed the faster the engine is going? Not sure if I need to replace the relay or use an inline resistor of some sort. Think I may have an earth issue - the headlight does dim every now and then, but as the evenings are getting lighter and the headlamp is perhaps not needed as much I may put that off until it gets warm enough to be outside without several layers of clothes.

Hi Ben thanks for that! I adjusted mine yesterday. Only took 10 mins! Remove r clip and slacken nut on drive side, then loosen torque arm and knock adjuster round one notch at a time (both sides evenly) until chain at right position. I got the wife to check the chain in the window while I sat on it, in case that tightened it too much with my weight. I then tightened the axle nut and replaced the r clip before tightening the torque arm. I am saying torque arm - I assume that's what it is on the right hand side! I then double checked the chain position while on the centre stand in 1st and resprayed it with oil. Followed by its second wash in 3 weeks and sprayed everything with WD40. I'm not letting road salt do anymore damage!!

Is there any reason why I shouldn't leave the fuel line on? Not over keen on stripping it down!

Thanks for that guys. Coming from carb somewhere. Had small amount of fuel around it this morning, not enough to drip down. Took it for a run (any excuse!) and hasn't leaked. Only out for an hour but had 3 SMIDSY'S! When it stops snowing I'll remove the pipe before stripping the carb down. Been a good few years since stripping a carb so if I can get away without, I will!

Ok so fuel switch doesn't appear to work - just ran for 5 minutes in closed position! Best I not run out to far from a station then!!

Haven't switched with the engine running - I'll do that now the petrol has dried and see what happens.

Wonder if anyone might be able to help. This morning I switched my Sr125 to the reserve, it was very tight and wanted to know for sure it worked before I ran out. Got it moved round and then put it back. Went back out to the bike half hour later and found it had leaked. There is a fuel pipe on the opposite side which doesn't appear to go to anything, this is where it has leaked from. Could this be a bleeder pipe or overflow? Or could this point at a good reason not to use the reserve? The patch of petrol is only about 6 or 7" and doesn't appear to be leaking now its not turned to reserve.

Ok, so looks like its far too slack! Best I google a manual cos my Haynes still hasn't arrived

Cheers for that! I was bitten about 15 years ago - various financial drains postponed the inevitable - women/kids etc! You're right, no crisis and as I'm still below 40 (for at least 3 yrs!) certainly not mid life! Just saving now for full test.

Dumb question, can't find an answer on google and waiting for Haynes manual to arrive - how much play should there be in the chain? Mine seems quite loose, almost touching in places. Also, I've been advised to keep checking some gap, but was only a passing comment and was called away so couldn't clarify - any ideas? Apparently common thing on these older SR's?

I can't see previous threads on my phone. I have a 19 yr old SR125. How worried do I need to be??

Finally, I am new to biking. Taken a few years to persuade the missus! Taught her to drive 6 years ago, had twist and go for 5 years and finally, after that gave up the ghost and thanks to not being able to afford a second car, I got the response "get what the hell you like"! So now a proud owner of an SR125! Now being accused of having a mid life crisis! Hey ho! Another year or so and I might get permission to get my full licence.
