  1. Well I did some google searching and found a lot of fj600 steering stems with the same gap. Nothing special there, but I can't seem to find any of the top. I almost want to say that the steering head needs milled out or something to allow the extra space for the preload nut..or whatever its called, to thread on more. I'm going to take it off when I get home and check it out more because I believe something needs to be done. For those of you who haven't used all balls they are pretty awesome. The tapered design allows a strong one piece design with the upper and lower sets. Plus there is no chance of "ball float" as I call it. Picture turning the forks and say 2 out of the 20 balls doesn't roll and merely smears over the grease instead of rolling. The all balls is a tapered kit much like the wheel bearing of a pickup truck. Stronger axial force can be applied without any deflection of the steering head. Anyway enough mythbusters science here. I'll check it out later and post.
  2. So i've been thinking of this a lot lately. Its been a while since i've had the old ball bearing races taken off the steering stem. Well with the all balls tapered bearings the bottom of the stem has a small space of maybe two quarters. I want to say thats just where the original seal was. My problem is that the upper set is taller than the original only allowing a few threads to grab on the nut. Is this going to be something i need to be concerned about? I don't see it loosening up and i do know that some people say its normal for the upper set to be taller but i feel like the nut should at least be level with the threads at the top. I can get it machined but i'm not sure that i should.
  3. I'm glad that link worked. I've never tried to share anything from facebook. Hopefully my fairing stay will be here this week and i can test fit the gauges.

Well i have a TON of picutres to upload on here. Pretty much all 90 some pictures are on facebook so i'll post a few on here in a bit. But my work for the day was re-sealing the cases. For the first time ever i used anarobic sealant. I've never actually used it. I always use hondabond or the grey diesel sealant we have at ford being its about the same identical stuff. I was talking to one of the tranny guys at work about sealing cases and he mentioned that i may want to try anarobic sealant. Because of the bearing clearances when sealing a case anarobic is thinner and easier to manipulate since it only dries in the absense of oxygen. He also used to work at volvo and rover and evidentally they use the same stuff on volvo engines. I firgure if it can endure the heat of a turbo charged vehicle that my air cooled fj will be fine. I did find it much nicer when i was re-assembling the two halfs since it didn't dry in 15 mintues and just dried whenever i torqued the cases. I also got the new oil pump and o-rings in place, and the new ...well ebay new, oil pressure relief fitting and valve for the primary chain drive inside. I then test fitted the uber burnt out clutch and made sure it spun the crank and transmission with no binding or issues shifting unlike my speedy gonzalez friend that screwed up his 2nd and 3rd gears on his gsxr.... All in all, i happily spent a good hour in the garage carefully sealing the two together and checking that everything was in place. I know another tensioner kept falling out so i loaded it up with transel gold. If you've never used it, its awesome stuff. The transmission guys use it and i've found it perfect for everything. Its like vaseline but dissolves in the oil, it lubricates like crazy, and will hold certain things in place to assemble them. I've used it on water pump o-rings, aluminum on aluminum transfer case parts. Great stuff, my friend at work is also using "assembly goo". Chunkier, and less stringy but he seems to like it as well. Being he builds transmissions and has been doing it a few years more than i, he's pretty trust worthy. So tips for the day, Assembly goo is good, Transdel Gold awesome, Permatex Assembly Lube awesome, and Permatex Anarobic Sealant rules supreme!
  6. So i ended up finding a used harness on ebay for 22 with shipping. I can't believe my luck on that. I've also managed to score a cluster with wiring and a bracket for 22 as well. Aside from the battery and a crusty fuel sender i pulled last night thats pretty much all the electronics i need at this point. I have an Ingnitor, though i have no idea if its good, and the flasher unit x3. I'm sure at least one of them is working. I'll put the FZ harness on here soon if someone needs it. I'd rather help a fellow rider out than rape someone on ebay for 25 year old parts.
  7. I could but the numerous wires i would need and then actual connectors that fit the oem pins would be costly after a bit. I could spend 100 bucks or spend almost that making it..... i'll just look around the internet for one.
  8. actually i have another harness question. I have seen a few candaian market harness's on ebay. US the fj was produced 84 and 85 for those of you who don't know. Now i don 't have a schematic of a newer produced fj or called the diversion or whatever weak boring name it is... Are they still the same harness or because of europian laws are there some differences. Reason i ask is it doesn't seem there are many of these roaming the planet anymore so obviously the more chance of me finding parts the better. I also need to source an engine gasket kit but i think i'll have to just get a top end kit and reuse some seal or order them individually.
  9. negatory. I finally decided this morning against doing this. One because it be kinda of confusing to cut wires and attach new connectors and two if i sold it and someone had to work on it, it'll just piss someone off and make things worse. I'll just sell this harness and continue searching for an fj600 harness. There is one on ebay for 70 so i might hop on it if i cant find another cheaper.
  10. But if so why. Its the same bike only with an added headlight. Ill look at the pages again but why wiuld the solenoid need a ground if the fz doesnt use it. I dont think the solenoid is case grounded but that is a possibility. I have the flu or something so i shall figure it out later this week.

I have copies of both schematics and both bikes use the same parts. Cdi, flasher relay, side stand relays..... My only question is on the fz, there is one wire leading back to the flasher relay. The fj uses 2 wires. One goes to the flasher relay and the other goes to the starter switch. Being both bikes have the same engine, and same parts why the extra wire on the fj and is it needed?

I can verify no valve. I just flushed out the oil cooler on my fj. There is no tempature check valve like in most vehicles. The fj and fz use the same cooler.
  13. I have copies of both but im about to post in workshop. I wasnt actually asking anything being this is new members. I was just giving an insight of why i joined.
  14. I would like to say hi and then more importantly why i need help. I have 73 pictures so far of what i have got myself into. But first about me. I have one class left at the.community college where i will have an auto motive service degree. Yes you can get one. I did that because i wanted to learn the correct way. I have made quite a few bikes sing again. My first and pride and joy is my 75 Kawasaki triple. I bought it for 125 dollars not running but complete. My father helped me quite a bit but within a week i had new points and condensors. It fogged out the road. 2 stroke oil that hasnt burned in 27 years is nasty....times 3. Anyway, im doing this on my phone so please excuse the typos. Im working on buying a house so no internet for the moment. Now my problem. I bought a titled fj600 for 125 dollars. The guy claimed most of it was there. So far i had a rusty tank, an engine that was in the yard on its side, a rack of carbs laying in the yard next to junk, and a harness that looks like spaghetti. I have had a real treat spending money on this turd to the moment. Im trying to budget 1000 on it. So far now i have rear panels, the correct wheel and rear brake, an oil cooler, repaired the carbs minus o,rings and washers for the pilots, and fixed the bottom engine oil feed lines. I still need rings and such but im on track. Now my biggest challenge is to try to use an fz600 harness on it. Wiring looks almoat identical so i need help using that harness with my controls or maybe someone on here has an fj600 harness that is useable for a non ebay price and i can make an aweaome deal on this harness. Thanks and ill post more later.
