Hi All Had my Xj since october and every time it rains the front brakes are crap, takes a good 5 to 8 seconds of pulling hard on the lever to clear the water off then and I now have to virtually ride with them on to keep em working when it rains, looked at the front wheel whilst going along the other day when it was raining and the water was being channelled onto the brake caliper by the mudguard, is this normal, if so is there anything i can do to solve it, get the fright of my life every time i try to use them (quite often on the A2 in rush hour) Rob

Hi All Well after 3 weeks of just looking at my XJ600, I passed my DAS today and was able to take it for a ride, did 125 miles this afternoon with a BIG grin on my face, will still have the grin on the way to work tomorrow, no more thrashing the life out of the XV125 and being overtaken by lorries up the A2, now that's hairy! Hi All Right Im now fed up with being overtaken by lorries on the way to work (A2 in kent) on my XV125, its just too slow going up hills, so I have booked my DAS for the 26th October. Im looking at getting a bigger bike for the commute to work (and have a bit of fun on) I need something with a fairing on it as it will be used all through the winter, it needs to be comfy for a pillion (if i can persuade the missis to get on it) not too new as the budget wont stretch and not a sports bike so a bit of an all rounder, was thinking of an XJ600N as i prefere it to the diversion's, just got a few questions if anyone can help. Do the XJ600N's suffer from any common faults (bloke at the local bike shop said the swing arm bearings go on a regular basis) What are the engines like for reliability. Do they have good alternators on them (would be looking at fitting some extra lights, heated grips etc) What sort of mpg should i be able to get and whats the range of the tank? Is there anything to look out for when buying one (seen a few on fleabay) What are the chain & sprockets like for wear/lifespan, i will be putting a scott oiler on it (seem to be always adjusting and lubeing mine) Thanks in advance for any replies, just got to pass the test now!!! Rob

Hi Are you loosing coolant? if you are I would say thats either the head gasket or cracked head/barrel, no way to check apart from the head has to come off. Would suspect the gasket first unless the engine has been cooked. Rob

If its anything like the starter on my Virago the windings are shorting out, was ok to start with then went slower to the point it wouldnt engage the starter clutch, now just wont turn at all, quoted £216 + vat for a new one :-( Rob
  8. There was one on Ebay last week, gone now though. Rob

Many years ago i bought from new a Honda watercooled 2 stroke MBX80, kept it for 11 months and then went to trade it in for a 125 4 stroke twin, got to the dealer and he came out to do a valuation, he looked at the bike, looked at the speedo, looked at me then looked at the bike again, then the speedo then me and said "F**K ME thats had a hard life your only supposed to do 2500 mile a year" i had done 23000 miles in 11 months on an 80cc bike!!!! Mileage doesnt bother me at all, low mileage stop start engines can have more problems that a high mileage motorway used one, stop start wont get all the engine up to temp to boil off any condensation out of the engine and oil, which then turns to an acid destroying bearings etc. My Jaguar has done 198000 miles up and down motorways, the engine is as good as new!!! Rob
  10. 309Hp from a 1979 1100 standard tune, dont think so, one of my mates has turbo'ed a fireblade and that put's out 300Hp Try 75hp @ 8000rpm as here: http://www.xs11.com/specifications/f-spec1.shtml If it was the largest Hp Yamaha ever made why dont they still make it!!!!! Rob
  11. Hi Had to strip my XV125 due to a bigend failure and need to know what the torque settings are for the head bolts before i can rebuild it, looked for a manual but they all seem to be for the 250 up, not the 125! Thanks Rob

Hi All Well now i have done it, after riding for years "when i was a lad" (but never passing my bike test (i know im a kn*) and being turned to the dark side by them 4 wheeled things, i have now bought a XV125 Virago. Been thinking about bikes for ages now but always resisted as i know i will be hooked on them again (I had an 80cc sports bike and did 23000 miles in under a year, mad or what) What finally did it was sitting in the queues at the blackwall tunnel for the past 6 weeks and watching with envy as the bikes slip past (well they do by me coz i get out the way) it was getting to be 3 hours to get to work and 2 to get home (only 40 miles) Pick it up on sunday, getting the CBT (what a pain in the butt havin to do it (i did pass my moped test when i was 16)) booked for next week then no more traffic jams. Well am i mad now or what????? Rob
  15. Hi All Im looking at buying a XV125 Virago but its a non runner, been told by the owner it will turn over on the starter, doesn't make any bad noises, sounds like it has comperssion but just wont start. Do the virago's have any common faults to stop them starting like Ignition modules carbs etc I would go and have a look before buying it but its quite a way away so i dont want to end up with a lemon. Any help would be good One other thing, are these restricted output engines, going to take my test soon (couple of months but need a bike now to get to work) and wondered if i can up the power output till i can change to a different bike.
