XT500 Street Tracker
Yes I've considered that, its a drum hub and was hoping to convert front brakes to disk and also wanted to keep original wheel intact for potentional to re-convert back to original. About $400 locally to have 18" wheel laced to my hub.

XT500 Street Tracker
Haven't measured yet, just in the dreamy phase... Good idea Airhead would still need an 18" wheel and hub of correct width to fit lower tubes. I said 19" in orig post but rear is actually 18", duh.

XT500 Street Tracker
Hey everyone, glad to back, one of my non-yam projects has been causing grief, soon sorted hopefully. Anyway, I'm starting in the planning phase of converting my all original 81 XT500 to a street tracker style bike and am looking for some input on a few things. Currently has a 19" rear and 21" front wheel and I want to go 19" for both. My options appear to be to get a 19" re-laced from my original hub or find a compatible front end from another bike. I would 'like' to leave my original wheel intact for option of bolting everything back up to return bike to original if ever so desired and I think the stock forks would look too long, goofy, with a 19" wheel. I'm hoping I can leave my steering yokes intact and find forks of correct diameter that will slip in and hopefully be of correct width for a spoked 19" wheel. Does anybody know of such cross compatibility? SR500 or XS650 maybe? I do have a local bike wrecker I can visit with my trusty calipers and measuring tape in hand in need be but if anybody can narrow down my search that would be great. I'm also thinking about exhaust options and sprocket set-up for road riding, all suggestions considered, thanks guys, cheers!

Check for intake leaks too.

Handlebar grips
I've always used this method too, works great if you have an aircompressor. I've heard of some people using hairspray although I've never tried it.

First bike, 1980 dt175
Hi Connor, If this is your first bike a great investment would be an owners manual, I'm sure there would have to be one available online. Tinkering with bikes can almost be as satisfying as riding. Is there oil in the oil tank? If not, mixing your fuel will be necessary. If you want to test your oil pump, put a little Yamalube or other high quality two-stroke mix in the oil tank and look for the oil feed line coming from your engine case to the carb. Pull the line off the carb and run your bike, oil should come out of that line when you roll the throttle. If you do this test with mixed fuel in the bike there will be no danger of damaging the engine internals. Nothing wrong with running mixed gas and not using the oil injection system, as stated above you always know you are getting the necessary lubrication. A manual will tell you how to adjust your oil pump to give the proper oil/fuel ratio. Cheers, have fun!

TY 175 Taillight issue
With bike running, head light works great on high and low beam but the tail light was burnt out. If i hook up my test light on one of the taillight leads it comes on and on the other lead the brake light works through my test light, thinking to myself this is a good thing. When I put a new 6V bulb in the head light goes out and nothing works, as soon as I pull out the new taillight my head light comes back on...any ideas?

TY 175 Problems
Fabricated a new filter from K&N foam and it worked great for about two minutes then the same thing...turned out there was a bunch of crud in the bottom of the fuel tank. Flushed tank and cleaned carb and she is once again a 60mph machine!

TY 175 Problems
Carbueration, the old air filter was crumbling apart and the carb was full of dirt and air filter foam residue. Cleaned up and it runs great, just need a new filter element. Who is my best online parts supplier for the TY?

TY 175 Problems
Hey everyone, So the 77 TY175 has developed a power loss/poor running issue. It starts first kick every time, idles great and will take as much throttle as you want to give it from idle. Once in gear and riding it starts to accelerate normally and then kind of dies out (still running) but just kind of gets sputtery and won't come develop any kind of power or speed from there, if that makes sense. Plug looks decent, am replacing it tonight anyway just in case. Carb has been cleaned and it has new pistion and rings. It was running fine until yesterday. I don't have a compression tester but am shopping for one today. Maybe carboned up exhaust? Crank seal leak? Any advice appreciated....thanks in advance. Cheers! Adam
