  1. hi all im on rebuilding the engine a 1985 xt 600 cc and ive came across a bit of a stumbling block. its a 550 cc lump in a 600 frame and before i realized this i bought a gasket kit for a 600 cc :eusa_doh:the cylinder head and base gaskets will be no good but my question is will the rest of the set fit ? looking on Google images the 550 and 600 engines took identical and so im hoping that the only difference is the bore

yeah lads i think that we might be getting somewhere. ive had a good look inside the black hole and i was wrong about being able to touch the gears thank god and there seems to be no trace of oil inside so once i get the generator back on and put some oil in the engine ill kick it over and see what happens and hope i dont have a fountain of oil. if all else fails i can hammer a cork in
  4. ive always being tempted by that myself but the kit costs £400 have you thought of trying to find a dt 200 engine that might work better and cheaper for you

hi all im restoring an 1985 xt 550. its going reasonably well except for a round hole about the width of your middle finger located just to the right of the front sprocket hidden behind the oil pipe it was plastered over with chemical metal. when you put your finger in for a bit of a probe around you can feel.... the gears !!!!!!! this can't be good. at all. the manual has no mention of the offending hole but its perfectly round you would think it was meant to be there it looks like its being machined in. i can't believe that someone would go through the trouble to go crazy with a grinder and cut a a gaping hole for the fun. any ideas anyone?
  6. year mine will get only 65 mph to and god i wish it would get more being trail bikes originally they must be geared more for talk than top end the sm version differs very little from its trail going brother is it derestricted fully ?. try (dtr.net) in google its a forum dedicated to the dtr they have a section on FULLY derestricting the bike they say it can go all the way to 80mph !!!

hi all does anyone know the seat height of a 1985 xt 550 because mine is very small in fact my dtr towers over it ?
  8. yeah wishful thinking on my part lol you can get a 170cc top end by athena for £400 to bolt on but I think it will blow the bottom end. £400 you may as well buy a full 250cc engine and wiring loom and graft if in. its been done

hi all iv just got a hold of an 1982 yamaha XT 550 as a project the main problem that i have is tail light/brake light. when the headlight is switched off the tail/brake light works fine, only lights up when the brake is pressed. but when the headlight switched on the tail/brake light will not work in any way, not to light up the number plate or as a brake light even when the brake is pressed. this is the one major thing stopping me from getting the bike road legal. can anyone help me ??
