  1. Are you positive there not to much oil? Otherwise it sounds like you are getting crankcase compression which generally means worn rings, have you or a mate got a compression tester this should give you an idea. I don't know the values but test one barrel against the other and see how close they are.
  2. On the smaller bikes there are generally fairly strait forward but when you take them to the shop ask him to check for damage because if you don't they wont.
  3. Check for dents in the chrome stantions, if there is any these will need fixing first as they need to be smooth any new seals fitted with out repairing these first will fail again.
  4. I'm not familiar with the FI on the Xjr13 but if you can adjust the CO like the FJR13 if so its probably set to 2.5% raise it to 4% and it should smooth out the idle or just raise it 0.5% and check. The Fjr ratio 10 = 1%. Note: DO NOT Equalise / level off all the numbers. Just take note of all the original numbers and add the amount you need. Just noticed 1st post May. Doh..
  5. Also the A/Dive units you can just leave off the extra hydraulic pipes it shouldn't leak as the brake fluid and fork oil don't mix anyway and it will save you trouble of making 2 plates.
  6. The forks are very long on the XJ and quite thin I cant think of anything that would fit also the they are leading axel and a normal setup would change the geometry, The A/Dive can be taken off then a blanking plate fitted, as for re-chroming somewhere between 150-200 pounds
  7. Been away Yamste, the fuel tap is not very accessible where its sited, you could try an inline tap.
  8. At lest its not leaking money anymore. Also remember your tank range will be less as the last 2-3ltrs will not be accessible.
  9. Okay Yamste, It must have been the 3CV they started gutting the pump on..
  10. The fuel pump is on the right hand side behind the side panel. Im fairly sure when Yamaha bored the lump to 1200 that's when they fitted the pump?? The frame number should start 1TX or 36Y what does the engine number say?
  11. Once you have sorted out the paint you can buy some clear protective sheet which would stick on top and stop those scuffs.
  12. So its either a 1TX or 3CV the electric reserve switch can go faulty try disconnecting it, both these models have a fuel pump and it shouldn't really pass any fuel when the ignition is off? Yours isnt a 36Y (1100) with a 1200 motor by any chance as these were gravity fed?
  13. I had a Silver Seca those padded bars and long leading link forks were a nightmare in the bends and the anti-dive didnt work the motor was a peach though and made that XJ transmission whistle. I used to tour on it with my Girlfriend now Wife and 60mpg was possible. I luved that bike I had to sell it to buy a house . Anyway getting back to your question I still may have the headlight unit as I fitted a Vetter fairing and maybe the YICS carb tool but I cant remember seeing it in my service kit.
  14. Even standard the H2 was lucky to do 20mpg so dragging one is a money pit.
  15. Yeah Phil rebuilds the ABS system even though Yamaha don't sell any service parts..
  16. ABS bits are quite pricey as for Yam dealers it depends on what part of the world your from..
  17. Are you sure that turning the screw out richens the mixture but I thought turning the screw in richened the mix? I havnt worked on a XS400 for over 20+ years so don't take this as gospel. Also the air screw only effects the first 20-25% of rev range so doesnt effect much above that.
  18. Pod filters with a capped off end can cause air flow problems (well on 2 stroke motors they do) there maybe a air corrector kit available which will save you a lot of trouble.
  19. If it slowly lost power it seem more likely to be fuelling is there a fuel pump on this model?
  20. Have you checked the suspension linkage, these don't get serviced and the bearing seize and a resulting knocking noise starts.
  21. Hi I have the MK1 (which is the best model)and the OEM seat is poor. I have a Corbin which is a hard as nails but for some reason its so comfy, I've done thousands of miles with no complaints.
  22. The starter button can give trouble on the FJ range of bikes as it works as the earth connection if my memory serves me correctly, however since you have only been working around the sub-frame area it does seem the problem should be there.
  23. Thanks for the welcome. I wish mine was like that Drewpy. Mines a Mk5 apparantly (French) not really up on Nippy's just got hold of it years ago but never done anything with it. Its all there but needs loads of luv.
  24. God knows why I put Stan I ment Len
  25. Not really anywhere left in Birmingham. Vale Onslow an old bike shop at Camp Hill would have been your best bet but, since Len (not Stan) pasted away the sons haven't bothered opening for years.
