Sorry to seem really dense but I have returned to biking after a long break. My old bikes were all singles or twins. I now have a new XJ6 naked. The 4 cylinder engine is great after a large 500 single! But any advice on gear usage. Around town I think I am short shifting a lot using 5 th and 6 th too much. The bike pulls well but I think j should be using 3 rd and 4 th in the 30 zones. Whats the best rev range for town riding? Also has anyone fitted a devil end can on the original exhaust? It's so quite. Cheers.

Sorry but although I posted about this before its still bothering me a little. Its going in for its first service soon but I don't want to be fobbed off. My XJ6 runs fine, pulls very well and never misses a beat. But I have noticed that when pulling away or low speeds in first or second I can hear a whitsling/whine noise (between 2000 to 3000 rpm). If you increase the revs its goes. If I pull the clutch in it goes. When the bike is on the stand i can hold the throttle at a rev range and hear the noise. Can't exactly hear where its coming from, could be the cams or is it the air induction, whistling the air in or possiblly the transmission. I have seen on forums that the FZ6 has a similar whine. Anyone any thoughts? Thanks Arthur

Hi, I have posted over the last few days about an engine noise on my XJ6 . Today I have found out this from the clutch cover area. It's only first and second gear and only when pulling away or low speed. I think it is a normal transmission wine. But being inexperienced I think I am looking for problems which aren't there. A bit paranoid as the bike is new. Thanks to those who have replied. Arthur

Yeah thanks. I did know and will we on the side of caution. Some people seem to set theirs by eye. Not for me. The trusty rule will be used.

Interesting. I had mine from new. Unfortunately the wheel alingment markers seemed out a little. So i corrected this. But since then I have been concerned I have the chain too loose. The owners manual says 45 to 55 mm. But doesn't say whether this is the distance pin to pin up and down, or distance pulled down on bottom edge to pushed up on top edge. I have posted about the chain tension and people say it is pin to pin up and down. mine is set around 55 at present. I may tighten mine up a bit. Thanks

Hi, I previously posted a topic about XJ6 engine noise. Thanks for the replies. Today I rode about 80 miles. I noticed that once warm and pulling around 2000 revs in first or second I hear a slight winning noise. No knocking etc just a progressive wine. Is this normal. I haven't had such a new bike before and don't know what to expect. Probably talking rubbish. Any thoughts? Cheers Arthur

Thanks. Apparently the engine is a de tuned R6 so should be fairly bullet proof. It's obviously heat related as it goes within a few moments as the engine warms. Do you get the chain rubbing on the plastic part of the arm to? Any issues with oil and the coolant pump? Cheers

Thanks. I have spoken to the dealer. I think the noise is just the vales/tappets warming up. It is due in for its first service next week anyway. The oil leak is going to be looked at too. The chain slack advice is useful. I have it at about 55 at the moment but it does drag on the plastic guide on the top of the swinging arm when coming off the throttle when the engine is cold. Once the engine and gearbox have warmed up you don't notice it. I might tighten it a touch as the down shifts feel a little clunky with the chain this slack. Thanks again.

Hi, I have a 2010 XJ6 naked. Its done about 450 miles but I have found 2 things. Firstly after a ride of about 40 miles i find a small oil drip at the bottom of the coolant pump. I think it is coming from where the pump enters the engine. The pump did sound a little noisey when the bike warmed up on tick over the other day. Also when I let the bike warm up on the stand I get a slight engine noise / rattle for a very short period of time. It always happens when the temp gauge is about 47 to 50 degrees. Oh and the manual is a bit unclear about chain slack. The 45 to 55 mm amount shown deosn't say if its when the chain is pulled down and up measured between the same point eg the link pins, or the bottom edge when pulled down and the top edge when pulled up. any ideas? Hi, Just returned to riding after too long a break! I have a new XJ6N. I was reading through the owners manual and have a question about the drive chain tension. Should the measurement of slack be between the 2 positions of the chain centre pins (eg when pulled up and down at the tightest spot), or the distance between the lower edge of the chain when pulled down and the top edge when pushed up ? Silly question I know but the handbook is a little brief. Many thanks, Arthur
