Ok, when you take the starter motor off you have a gert big hole where it slides into the engine, that's the hole you need to look inside of, you should see the ring gear sticking just out from the bottom of the hole and as you turn the engine it should turn anti-clockwise to you, if you have a mate that can help, get him to stick his finger in the hole and turn just the ring gear one section at a time, it's a right bastard to get to and can take ages but if you see any missing or worn teeth there's your problem half solved.

You hold the mirror inside the engine space facing you then shine the torch at the mirror and shine it in the hole, with your third hand turn the engine over slowly while dancing in clogs and wearing a ballerinas outfit. Oh and don't forget to check the end of the starter motor gear as well it might look ok but they do wear.

Pretty sure your starter clutch is the problem, you need to take the starter off and check the teeth on the starter ring to make sure that there aren't any teeth missing or worn down. Then oil the shit out of it to free anything that's stuck, you might also need a starter clutch kit to re-furb the starter, don't know what spares are like to get where you live but Wemoto or Yambits and Fowlers have them in stock for about £30 a set. Hi, First idea say hello in the new members section, you will get more feedback if you say hello, we get A LOT of folks who only want advice then bugger off without even saying "thank you", just sayin! I had the same fault on my FJR it's almost certainly a wiring fault in the feed to the coil, I know you have looked at them but I bet it's still the wiring, mine took about 4 hours to find and that was just before I was going to set fire to it. Take the wire connectors apart, look deep inside and they will be corroded, then get some switch cleaner and a small stiff brush and clean till they gleam, then do the same thing once a year till you sell it.

Well got it home today and it seems to be in really good condition, the guys at the warehouse lifted it into the back of the truck for me so no problems there only thing is I have to get the bloody thing out now! Still that's what son's are for isn't it and I have 2 of them? Anyway it appears that it's a 2007/09 vintage motor and has all the bit's I wanted still attached so the next couple of weeks will be see me taking stuff off and bolting stuff back on to it. I am thinking of doing a generator swap for the newer version to take it from 200 volts output to the newer 430 volt version, just need to score an uprated regulator from somewhere and the jobs a goodun! Then I can attach all the toys to it without the lights going dim. Got a grin a mile wide at the moment.

Leave it alone, got some like that on my tyre and still rolling along, if you just have to do something about it then plug it from the inside, means you will have to remove the tyre then re-balance it after that. And it looks to me like it's in the thickest part of the tyre as well so really not a problem mate.

Forgot to say it was listed as "spares or repairs" but even so if I can get the bugger to turn over and strip the bit's I want to keep off of it it's going to save me a fortune on parts for mine. Just a replacement water pump and oil pump is an arm and a leg from Yam, the casings alone are worth more than I paid plus I get a full set of valves and cam shafts. There is the possibility to swap my motor out as well just need an extended the lower left mounting adaptor and some minor wiring will see it fit straight in.

Before you go out and buy a new barrel try a long squirt of WD40 down the key hole, they get dry and the original grease gets crusty, then turn the key on and off a couple of dozen times, you never know mate it might just be crud and shit between the contacts. As Cynic said it does sound like a wiring or contact problem.

So as is usual I was having a quick look through what EBAY had to offer and came across an advert for an 2007 FJR1300 engine, that looks cheap I thought and bunged in a bid for £99, of course I was thinking I have no chance of getting that for that price! The fella selling it was local to me and he strips and sells car engines for a living, you know the sort, your engine goes pop and you can't be arsed to repair it yourself so you plump for an EBAY special which probably came out of a worse car than yours. Anyway the FJR engine is complete with all the gubbins included electrics and mechanicals. So I wait around all day and bugger me I got it! The cheapest engine I have ever seen on evilbay has been £400 so I go to pick it up on Tuesday. Just goes to show if your lucky these things can happen. Figure if I take the parts off I want I can still get my money back. Happy days!!!!

Well sounded like he enjoyed that!! Very lucky to even stay on, I had a similar thing in France in the car, stopped me from 70mph to 5mph in about 20 feet.

No Drewpy this actually is a broken sprag clutch mate, even if they do go it should cost no more than £160 for a replacement and about 4 hours to swap out. Plus if you do replace them with a new updated one they are slightly larger and less likely to go bang!
