But what are the revs for a certain speed in top gear?
  2. splittie65 replied to splittie65's post in a topic in Classics
But IS THERE an advance and retard??? My manual mentions it for the 125 electric start models with generator but not the standard CT3 with magneto.

Is there an advance mechanism? No mention of it in my manual when timing it?
  4. splittie65 replied to splittie65's post in a topic in Classics
    But at what revs?
  5. Did you ever resolve the problem???? Just wondered what it was.

Just got the CT3 through an MOT, so can do some road testing. Couple of things.....I believe I have put it back to standard gearing (45 teeth rear: 16 teeth front), but at 6000 revs in top gear the speedo reads 40 mph. 5000 revs is about 30 mph. Is that normal? Also, it has just had a rebore, so I don't want to push it too hard, but it really struggles to go above 5000 rpm. I had introduced an air filter, but it is the same with or without. Checked the timing, and its as close as I can get it. Any suggestions from all you experts out there?
  7. Does the CT3 have an advance/retard on the points/timing??? Only ask as i thought they didn't and I'm about to check my timing. (And mine just passed it's MOT for the first time today )

Still not managed to sort it....any suggestions?

Thanks for that...although doesn't sound easy. I'll give it a go, but measuring 1.8mm sounds a bit difficult. How critical is it?
  11. splittie65 posted a post in a topic in Classics
Is there another way of checking the timing besides buying a special tol and measuring when the piston is 1.8mm before top dead centre? And is there a way to adjust it apart from adjusting the point gap size?

So 'Up Yours', you're saying your bike does this too?

Just put my CT3 back together after a reasonablly comprehensive refurb, and am wondering if I have an earthing problem? The bike starts and works fine and all the electrics work OK..........however, when I put the indicators on the neutral light dims in time with the flashers...likewise if I put the brake light on etc....... thats with the engine running or not. I have tried earthing the battery out to other points on the bike, but no difference. Is it an earthing problem or could it be something else? Or is this normal?
  14. I've been restoring a 1973 CT3 and have found its often cheaper to buy parts on the american ebay site, even with the occassional import duty. Parts are alot more common there too.

Thanks for your encouragement.......what was your biggest headache and did you have to have the crankshaft rebuilt?

I have been renovating a CT3 for the last year.....off and on..... It's now time for the engine. I have taken the top end off and have determined it'll be best to get it rebored. The bottom end it right on the limit of needing a refurb, and my question is.... Has anyone dismantled one of these engines, and how easy is it? I've read the manuals, but I wanted peoples' first hand responses...what are the main problems people have encounted? Best to do it myself? Pay someone else? Leave it alone?

On the parts list there are a 314-.... and 316-..... pistons and piston rings. Can I assume the 314 refers to the AT series and 316 refers to the CT series?

Does anyone know if the At series (125cc) and the CT series(175) have the same bore sizes? I often see pistons advertised for both models.

Couldn't get it out without destroying it.....even then it was difficult. I bought a replacement on the USA ebay for about £8 including shipping. Don't know whether that's a good price or not?

I need to respray the oil tank on my 1973 CT3. Any one know of the best way to get the oil seal and level viewer out, preferably without destroying it? Thanks.

I would have thought it very difficult to make a circular rubber gasket with a 'U' shape profile. Any ideas?
  23. splittie65 replied to splittie65's post in a topic in Classics
Hi Merv, Did you manage to check your seals?
  24. splittie65 replied to splittie65's post in a topic in Classics
Unlike other seals I've come across this has a 'U' shape profile to fit over the metal internal cap. OD is about 54mm ID is about 41mm overall depth about 5mm Thanx.
