xs500 overbore possibilities
Has anyone tried or does anyone know if it is possible to overbore an xs500 by 7mm and use the 80mm pistons say from an xs-1 overbore kit to change the overall size of the xs500 from 498ccm to 598ccm. with the DOHC's and some aftermarket intake and exhaust this might be kind of fun. Try and get it up closer to 60hbhp

Newbe here. So I have this problem, what next?
If I have this right we are looking at the Crankcase of the XS400-2E 1978. according to http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs400-2e-1978_model8665/partslist/B-09.html the crankcase assembly # is 1L91510001. You take the first three digits "1L9" and look it up in a cross reference guide like, http://www.johnnystoybox.com/yamaha_parts_cross-reference.htm and you find out that the first bike the part was used on is the xs360d. I could be totally wrong on this but when I do the cross reference for parts on my bike "77 xs500" it all seems to make sense. good luck

while checking out the welders for that option you should check your local craigslist and check ebay frequently and people are parting out these bikes or selling parts bikes whole quite often. I am not sure about your exact model but use the cross-reference guides to find out if the your part was used on something else first or again.

xs500 Carbs
This may be a silly question but i have been looking all over the place and I cannot find a 77 xs500 specific rebuild kit for the carbs. I believe I have the 38mm mikunis in it. I have also seen that there are oversized jet rebuild kits that i think fit the 38's is this a good idea? I am planning on putting a higher flow exhaust and air filters on the bike which I have heard you need to make the higher flow jets work properly.

Carb diagrams?
there is a zoomable copy of the microfiche at (http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs500d-19761977_model8590/partslist/C-06.html) that is if your bike is a 76/77 i think the carb is a 38mm mikuni on those models. not too sure though.
