I am about as far away from being an expert that you can get but a similar(ish) problem on mine was caused by the air mixing screw being fully closed on the carb.

No idea, guess it's because the bike hadn't been used for 6+ years before me and it was probably seized, would love to sort it myself but I think it's to big a job for my complete lack of knowledge! It will still of been a bargain and like the mechanic said it will virtually be a new engine so not feeling to bad about it. Just annoyed I've had a few days missed riding and maybe a while til I can afford to sort it!

300 miles in my bike overheats and cuts out, I let it cool down and it restarts great and I get it home. Following day I start riding it the 8 miles to the workshop to get it looked at and it completely dies and won't restart. Local workshop has took it apart today and has told me something similar to the piston has smahed a hole in something, like a bullet hole which as a result has damaged other parts and will require new parts and an engine rebuild (debris is in the lower engine) The parts I can remember he said I need are as follows: Con rod shaft Piston rings Engine rebuild - £180 flat fee Bearings Re-bore Tailpipe to end pipe rubber (this is missing - I knew this already) Parts will cost £250 approximately £500 altogether as a very rough ball park figure! He seems a genuine guy and has invited me to come down so he can show me bit by bit what needs doing so I understand fully. Does this seem a reasonable figure? Want it fixing properly but as cheaply as possible as my car has wiped my cash flow out on repairs recently!

These are hard times for all you know, you should be thankful they're playing their part in the economical recovery of the country by increasing profits of local companies paid to fix the problems it causes. How selfish of you to only consider yourself in times like these.

This sounds really tempting I wouldn't find it on my own, any L platers heading from the Manchester area that wouldn't mind a tag along if I can make it?

At minimum I would call the police, they will either hurry highways up to sort it or send a patrol to inspect. If you're going legal with it, these are the things I would be thinking about (I am no expert though) where is the gravel from ? When did the council last conduct routine maintenance to clear the road? Has anyone else complained? Worst case scenario - nobody else complained, they had a sweeper out the day before, unfortunately some random unknown vehicle shed a partial load just before your crash, would the court rule the council responsible?

Hello all, I know I have posted a few topics already but I feel rude as I haven't properly introduced myself. I'm from Wilmslow in Cheshire, I know nout about bikes. I have 2 children under 3 and as such I'm skint so hoping to do alot of maintenance myself and may call upon help from here! Motorbiking is something I have always knew I had to do, my partner doesn't understand it and thinks I'm an idiot but I just couldn't go another summer seeing everyone out on their bikes! So I recently picked up a bargain Yamaha DT125R - pic below. My aim is to keep it as original as possible and make it look spanking by sorting out the mismatched panels and giving it a general tidy up. Cheers!

Currently wearing an eclectic selection of items, found it difficult to get decent gear as I'm 6ft 5. HTC carbon helmet Weisse textile pants hein gericke winter gloves (need summer ones!) Triumph textile jacket with tiny logos - ride a DT125 I wear my work ankle magnum boots at the minute as I find my bought boots a bit stiff, need to wear them in.

No I got that, made sense when I gave it thought, physics and all, a blockage would essentially hold the fuel in the tank and stop it flowing I think my neighbour has sorted it now, there's a screw on the side of the carb an air inlet or similar that was fully closed, apparently it should of been a turn and a half open? Anyway started first time after this. If it starts fine tomorrow then I'm happy we've found the fault! Thanks for all your help, it's brilliant fun, learning how to do new things all the time!

For those interested, I have checked the air filter and this looks fine and also eliminated fuel flow from the tank as I drained a cup of fuel and the flow was good, there doesn't seem to be an issue with the fuel cap either. Before I bought it I know it was left out one evening in the rain before I collected so could it be a moisture issue? It has started a couple of times and there is a good spark from the plug. Not really sure what to do next as the Haynes manual is going into more complex areas like float valve needles and jets!

my neighbour suspects it's a fuel issue as he said the spark plug should of been covered in petrol and some on the floor the amount of times we tried to get it to run. Prior to having it MOT'd it had been sat since 2004. They replaced the carb, chain and sprockets and it was running fine for about 2 days. Cheers for all the help, bit nervous about attempting anything to technical so I'll see how far I get in the manual tomorrow!

I see what you're getting at, me being a numpty! I will check that tomorrow, if that fails I will start on the Haynes manual instructions. It's stopped again now, let it run earlier for a good 30 minutes to try and clear it out but came back to it this evening and it won't turn over again. (restarts great when warm if that's relevant to anything?) It was such a bargain that I'm not bothered about doing a bit of work on it. Thankfully it passed it's MOT last week and when it does turn over its running really well.

I think its the original, has a similar but slightly larger key to the ignition key. It also feels like it is getting a good seal on the tank.

Yeah, choke is on from cold, it's actually started now after standing for a few hours. Not really sure what's going on with it. Might have it looked at anyway.

Hello all Can anyone recommend a good garage around the Wilmslow area? My DT125R won't start, my more knowledgable neighbour has eliminated the spark plug and seems to think the engine isn't being fed fuel properly. It's had a new carburettor prior to me purchasing and it was running well yesterday. Cheers!

Amazing, picked my first bike up today, a yamaha DT125R. Runs amazingly and I'm very pleased with it. Unfortunately 5 minutes into riding it I've already learnt a lesson. I was signalling to turn right into my drive, another motorbike was approaching so I slowed down, turned my head to check behind me and some VW Golf driving muppet pulled out and overtook nearly taking me and the other biker down. Excellent. Thankfully I looked behind and luckily the other rider had experience to deal with it, I guess you have to get used to unpredictable behaviour from some car drivers!

Hello all New to the forums and hopefully a long term member! I have just bought today a 1998 DT125R, in good condition, unfortunately the chap I have bought it off is as much as a novice as me and therefore couldn't answer my questions. I could do with some answers! I'm sorry if these sound really stupid but I have never ridden a two stroke before! Where does the two stroke oil go? What is the best kind of two stroke oil to use? Do I need to mix the fuel with any oil - if so, what are te quantities? Where can I get replacement panels? (one is cracked) What regular maintenance is required? Where is the best place to buy spares? Anything I should be aware of? (I know very little!) If anyone can help it would be greatly received, I have a Haynes manual on order and it should be here in a couple of days but in order to collect I'm going to need to fuel it! Thanks.
