  1. I just shut the fuel off when parked. seems to be working well. thanks again.
  2. thanks for the responses. what could cause too much pressure?
  3. been battling an issue with my 1976 xs500. after the bike sits i'll come out to it and gas will be on the ground under it. I believe its coming out of the over flow for the carbs. i've had the petcocks rebuilt with new parts, had the carbs gone through (just a good cleaning) and replaced needles / seats and floats with n.o.s. parts. any ideas? I was thinking maybe pressure builds in the tank and pushes gas through the carbs while sitting?
  4. fuel keeps leaking out of the overflows for my mukuni carbs on my 76 xs500. just replaced the float needles and seats and noticed the floats were filled with fuel. tried resoldering them, but fuel still flows out of the overflows. does anyone know where i can get new floats for these carbs? are there other / newer floats that fit / interchange with the stock ones? any help on this would be appreciated. maybe even just the correct part number.
  5. thanks much!
  6. http://www.siriusconinc.com/ in canada doesn't have a listing for a 1976 xs500 float needle. do you have a link to the other sites mentioned? tried searching, but a bunch for results popped up. thanks again.
  7. does anyone know of a source for parts on the XS500? looking for new / n.o.s. float needles for the minuki carbs.
  8. did a compression check on both cylinders. 110 on each. the bike ran fine before the carb rework. i brought it in because i thought the petcocks were leaking fuel. but is was the left carb float that was bad. it had a hole in it and would fill with fuel. replaced the float, had the needle cleaned up and both carbs adjusted / sync'd. now there is a left cylinder oil leak and over heat issue. the tech says in runs fine all day long at idle or around 30mph, but at 55-60mph and above it loses power and over heats. the tech suggested i get new needles for the float bowls and start there. what do you think?
  9. just had my left bank carb reworked and now have a head gasket oil leak and the bike over heats at a normal operating temp. my tech suspects the cylinder has not seen compression in some time. wondering if anyone has any insight into this matter? what compression readings should i expect to see? can the head gasket be replaced on the bike or does the engine need to be removed?
  10. been dealing with rebuilt factory petcocks that leak for some time now. ready to remove them and go aftermarket. does anyone have a suggestion of what to replace them with? pictures and part numbers would be great.

pulled the cam cover off today and checked the exhaust valves. they were within spec. the cam chain seems tight on top, but couldn't tell if the tensioner was good or bad from above. tried to adjust it by loosening the acorn nut on the right front of the engine, but nothing happened when i did that. if i pull the right side engine cover off will i be able to see the tensioner for the cam chain, or does more then jusy the one cover have to come off? curious as to why you only gave specs for the exhaust and not the intake? thanks again.

i recently got my xs500 running after sitting for 3 years. the last issue i'm having is a noise coming from the right upper side of the engine. i'm assuming its the valves i hear. wondering if anyone can give me the specs for adjustment and the procedure.

i have a 1976 xs500 with 2 leaky petcocks. i just completely rebuilt both petcocks with new parts and they both still leak. they leak from the main body gasket, drain screw and from the front of the on/off/res valve body. any suggestions? can i use a gasket sealer?

one of the two petcocks on my 1976 xs500 leaks. can i just remove or block it off and run the one good one to both carbs without a problem? or should it be replaced? does anyone know why there is even two of these to begin with?

looking to replace the rear tire on my 1975 xs500. right now it has a goodyear eagle hst mv85v18 on it that is weather checked. this tire looks as if it had been rubbering as well with the previous owner. wondering what range of tire sizes i can go with and also what type of tire. the one thats on there now looks like a dirt bike-ish tire. can i go with a more street bike style tire? the bike will be mostly street / hwy driven. thanks for any input.
