That's why he said to go with the Uni filters, as they are built better. XS360 Main jet: 135 Air jet: .06 Jet Needle: 4FP21-3 Needle Jet: X-6 Needle Position: 3 Throttle Valve: 145 Pilot Jet: 17.5 Starter Jet: 40 Air Screw (number of turns out) 1 to 1.5

Yes, those will work for you. The 1981 Special has an SOHC engine, and Mikuni BS34 carbs.
  3. If you didn't re-jet your carbs after changing to pod filters then that is where your issues are coming from.
  4. How about this one? http://www.bikebandit.com/jt-steel-front-motorcycle-sprocket?m=8261&t=1&td=1
  5. Uni, talking about Uni
  6. Glasgow already had a course set up for my Master's. Newcastle was going to try and tailor one for me. It wasn't that easy of a decision, really.

It's actually extremely easy to change out the fuse box. I replaced mine with inline mini blade fuse holders. You just purchase them from an auto parts store, or Radio Shack. Then you just clip the two wires from each individual fuse and solder them to the new inline fuse holders. You need 4 inline fuse holders, one for each fuse line, and just go from one fuse to the next. If you know how to solder it will probably only take you about 30-45 min to change out.

I also just checked bikebandit.com, and they list the same air filter for my bike, your bike and the bike in the above thread. So if the pods fit his bike, they should most certainly fit yours.
  9. Ah, got it. Well, I can't help with that, sorry. I would have thought that is more of a fabrication item, but maybe someone makes it.
  10. You have the muffler, but just need the 2 into 1 headers?

You would think, but no. I'll try searching for the thread that explains all this. EDIT: Here you go, this thread has the info.
  12. Check this out, it's for the xs400 but my guess is it will fit your bike as well. These come in black! http://www.powersports360.com/eshopprod_cat_6250-19101-28261_product_892854.MAC_2-INTO-1_MEGAPHONES.htm?utm_source=VersaFeed&utm_medium=VersaFeed&utm_content=MAC+2-Into-1+Megaphones&utm_campaign=base&v_traceback=c0716_2314_f0717_1354
  13. Yup, it's the same size.

I agree, sounds like a battery issue. The XS400 likes a full battery to start with the electronic ignition. Good Luck. Also, I suggest replacing your fuse box if you haven't yet. It's made a world of difference with mine.

Yup, I think that you can purchase the 54mm pod filters and they will fit. Someone has done this and it worked, though I cannot remember who.

I really don't think that you will have much trouble fitting the pod filters to your bike. I believe the only issue will be re-jetting the carbs. Why don't you purchase 2 sets of jets bigger than the ones you have, and just try both to see what gives you the best result. You can purchase everything you need from MikesXS.com
  17. Mervin, don't forget the nagging. The nagging never ends.
  18. johnsnownw replied to Gst's post in a topic in Naked
More likely he did, and just tightened it too much. Mine, on the xs400, was stiff as well but I have a long handled ratchet that took are of that issue right quick.

  20. You should really introduce yourself before posing questions. Anyway, it could be a number of factors. My advice is to purchase a multimeter and go through your entire electrical system. It's a pain in the ass, but you will learn a lot about your bike, and probably fix the problem along the way. Good Luck.
  21. Well, five years ago I declined acceptance to Newcastle in favor of the University of Glasgow. Err. umm, so I guess I cannot join you. However, if I was there, I would totally go! Good luck.

I don't wear gloves much, even though I have them. I have plenty of scars on my knuckles from rocks and what not from traveling on I95 through Florida. Never really bothered me when I got hit. Mostly I wear the gloves when it gets cold, though I haven't worn them outside of Missouri. Which btw is where I was born, which is maybe the most boring state in the Union, besides Iowa.
  23. Sure did.
  24. Well carb changes aside, it is running fantastic. Took it our for a bit of a ride, when the rain stopped, and she runs just beautifully. No hesitation anywhere, and she sounds a lot more like a motorcycle now. The exhaust is just deeper and throatier. The bike feels like it might have a little more pep as well, but might all be in my head. Just couldn't be more pleased at the moment. So, now I guess I can turn it over to my fiance...can't say I'm that pleased to do so.
  25. Well, I went a readjusted them, the right side was spot on, but the left was a tad bit loose. Now they are all in spec, but the valves are a bit louder. I had to re-adjust the carbs, and noticed that no matter how far in or out I turned the mixture screws I couldn't get the carbs to race. So I just settled with what appears to be a slightly rich mixture, but the bike idles and revs quite well. Not sure why the carbs are acting differently, but still seems to work alright.
