Yep....gotta agree with Chris here Softer cams & possibly smaller carbs are usually the changes that Yamaha does to different models with basically the same powerplants.

If there's a provision for a kickstarter on the right side engine case (usually blanked off)..... I think you can buy the whole assembly from Yamaha .....which should only require the removal of oil & that right side case with minimal tools, to install......not too tough really. My brother's got a DR650 & looking to do this same mod.

Looks like it could be a Tenere' of some sorts? Appears to be a parallel twin......probably derived from the TRX/TDM line. The headlights, fairing & front fender through me off for a minute......looks just like an Affy Twin H*nda

Watched my lad win his 4th straight basketball game today.....his team is undefeated so far this season ......told him we should go for a ride to celebrate.......so we washed the UAV & headed for the Clackamas river.... Where I was amazed how fast the river was flowing & how much the water level had come up since I was here a coupla weeks ago ... That boat ramp was over twice as long last time I was here Such a nice day out.....had to get a shot or 2 of the mountain .... I'm sooooo looking forward to my RideOut to central Oregeon in 2 months! We then rode back home & I went over to a mate's apartment to give a hand moving his FishTank. While I was there, I got to do something I've never done before...... Hold a Python in my hands ..... What a Magnificent animal!.....the markings on her were awesome! She really seemed to like the smell of the leather....like most females do.

I was looking after a 600 Katana back in '98......ended up breaking a key with it as well ... Couldn't find another one to save my life ...... Funny thing is that I ended up getting a key from a Subaru to work! .....made from the same pattern I reckon.

A more recent shot of my Black Beast just after sorting an oil leak issue with the barrel.... Can't wait till April when I'll be taking in a weekend of DualSport riding with my 1-Armed mate who lives in Central Oregon. It's gonna be Great!

You may have an air leak somewhere ..... Base gasket......intake manifolds maybe?

A battery sure couldn't hurt.....especially if it's been sitting for any length of time. as all or most XT's do have batteries...... The older one's were of the 6 volt variety....but I think yours has a 12 volt like mine.
