Engine dies when choke is closed
Try an inline fuel filter between the petcock & the carbs......after cleaning those pilot jets. Should make a noticable difference.

1981 yamaha 550 Seca headlight
NO Prob! ....gotta keep my fellow Seca owners turned onto some of the tips I've learned over the years. Spencer.....that link to MotoGrid is your best bet for a new replacement........I'm having to face the inevetable & clean out my garage in the next week or so........I might still have a spare Seca550 headlamp assembly...as I recall having 2 @ 1 point. If I find anything that might help, I'll PM ya....OK? BTW.... to the forum

yamaha xt 550
to the forum Mucho I commend you on your choice of Yamaha's! Sounds like you're @ the decision point of making the upgrade that I've been wanting to do to mine for 3 years now! The 550 was only produced in '82 & '83......so if it was me....I'd look for a (hopefully complete) front end from '84-90 XT600. It should be pretty much a straight bolt-up deal....& it'll vastly improve the braking performance.

My first bike and restoration.
Looks good Rescue! Maybe have a look HERE for that housing? FYI.....'82 Seca 400's also had the same headlamp housing, if that's any help?

Labor Day Sprint.....
My Boss (not the wife, but the 1 who sign's my paycheck) told me I had an extra 8 hours of work to get down over the weekend.......So I went to work @ 4am Saturday so I could finish by noon & have the rest of my weekend Free'd up. Was out the door @ 6am on Sunday for a ride along the Clackamas river again..... Never get tired of this area..... Got found memories of railin' on my RD up here ...... This is what you see just over that guardrail ...... My timing seemed to be impeccable......as there was NO traffic to speak of!....Even though the campgrounds were all full!......Most peeps musta been sleeping off their overhangs from Saturday night I reckon. Having been up here plenty of times in the past......but not always with the use of my son's Digi-Cam.....I took advantage of this opportunity & captured these views that I've always wanted to....... Both from this wide spot in the road.... Finally took a break here before I headed back downstream..... & NO, that's not a funny-looking picnic table! It's actually a Launch Ramp for river Rafts..... All in All, a great morning for a sprint up the Clackamas! Glad I went & ordered some new tires for the XT though ..... Feels a bit sketchy goin' round corners on squared=off DS tires!

wet weather gear?
Frank Thomas makes a killer 1-piece Rainsuit......used 1 for 4 years I now am riding with a 2-piece from MotoBoss.......works great, but I think I'll go back to a 1-piece next time. BTW......I've been riding Everyday, year-round, for the past 21 years.... & Yes.....even in the Snow! Being a Snow Skier since I was 4y/o, definitely has it's advantages.

Hardleys are for those who don't have a clue what difference between Driving & actually RIDING a bike is all about!.....sign of the times OK Zoom.....when was the last time you rode your BoatAnchor for 150 miles through conditions like this?....... FYI......REAL Bikers ride EVERYDAY, Year-round.....through ANY weather that Mother Nature can dish out!

Why do yall put pipes on your plastic bikes?
Why do yall put pipes on your plastic bikes?....... 'Cuz personally.......I just LOVE leaving some FatAss Hardley rider @ the lights with my 25y/o YamaBeast! WTF is the point of taking out a 2nd mortgage on a overweight, overpriced, 2-Wheel BoatAnchor that can't even get out of it's own way? F**kin' 2-Wheel LazyBoys! ..... "If you're gonna ride a Couch........might as well just stay home!"

having a problem! could really use some help
More than likely, the carbs are the guilty culprit here..... But the points being worn or dirty could also have an effect with these symptoms.
