Part substituting
Hi folks. Working on my 1981 Virago xv750 and the starter solenoid is fried. broke both wires inside it. So i check around and the one for my bike is 115 bucks. ouch. So i look further and i find that for the 1981 xj750 the starter solenoid is only 70. I'm wondering, same size engine, just a different shape, how likely is it that it's the same size starter and solenoid and can be interchanged to save a buck? Thanks for the help.

XS400 oil filter stuck!
thanks. yep, i finally just grew a pair and pried it out. scraped the shit out of one side of the bore but it still feels relatively smooth to the touch. I've since gone back and found a manual for this model from yamaha themselves and it seems that this part is a mystery part. No clue where it comes from cuz it's not in any of the pics, they show it all there without that housing so I've chucked it and gone without and all seems to be running smoothly with the new filter. Thanx.

XS400 oil filter stuck!
Hi guys, I've got an 82 seca400 and it's been sitting all winter with a fresh change of oil in it. So this spring i decided i would change it again, but when i got to the oil filter I got stuck. This is one of those models where the oil filter is up inside the engine and you just remove a cover to drop it out and replace it. When you insert it the oil filter sits down inside an aluminum housing, and then that housing, cupping the oil filter is slid into the block and the cover goes below that and holds it all in. Well the cover comes off fine, but the old oil filter, the spring, and the aluminum housing are all still stuck up inside. The bore on this cylinder it's in looks really smooth so I'm worried about scoring it if I try to force the filter and housing out. I'm also worried that if i just fill it up with oil and run it for a bit that instead of loosening it up the heat will make my situation worse. Any advice?? I'm at a loss for a moment and every other post i see is about a stuck 'exterior' oil filter so everyone just says 'punch a screwdriver in it and twist it off'. Not much help to me since all i can see of the filter is it's bottom and the hole where the mounting bolt slides through. Thanks for looking, Scott

OMG Dog doesn't hunt!
Hello again all! o/ I'm back. Working on my new 1981 Yamaha Virago XV750, i like typing the whole thing out- sounds classy It's in fairly good shape for the most part, aside from someone sticking aftermarket led turn signals on it like it's a crotch rocket and the wiring needing a touch up. The problems i have are of course with the engine. I hauled it home in the back of the truck. Got it in the garage and took the tank off. Cleaned that out with some naval jelly cuz the filters were rust clogged. cleaned up the petcocks and got them operating the way their supposed to. and then i fired it up with some fresh gas. it ran, fast, then slow. 4k, 2k, 1.5k, 6k, 3k, and then die. so guy who i bought it from was a car mechanic but he attempted to rebuild the carb, so i figured he maybe didnt do a good job. i pull the carb and tear it down and everything looks great. but theres not air/fuel mixture screw in the right carb. i go out and low and behold there it is cradled in the engine block. So i go to haynes, and to clymer to see what they can tell me and they both say 'set at factory-don't fuck with it'- not very helpful since it's spring and the odds of finding a carb man in idaho with the time to look at my 29 year old yamaha withing the next six months are only slightly better than winning the lottery, but when i try to start it now it backfires and refuses. Does anyone know how to set the depth on these air mixture screws when you don't have the original setting to go off of anymore? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer. I'm a little lost and ready to start trying random fixes :/
