Great job, Roger! I'm currently working on a 73 RT3, but it won't end up looking that good! Care to recommend any of your parts sources?
  2. I've already cleaned the carb best I could without submerging in an agitating cleaner machine. I was afraid to do that since there are some hardened plastic pieces that retain the floats on their posts and one that guides the slide in the body, thinking they may crumble on removal and they are not available for replacement as far as I know. Placing them with the plastic floats in carb cleaning solution might also damage them? I didn't replace the enrichner plunger since it looked ok, but I did get a new o-ring for the main jet tube. Blew out all passages with carb cleaner and compressed air. Looks like I will be doing it again. Already tried the rolling in gear when hot, but no luck, so I've ordered a gasket set and will dig into the clutch basket. Thanks for the reply, Oldgit, Was hoping I was backwards on the choke lever operation, but I don't think so.
  3. Finally got it to fire after many kicks, plug cleanings and starter fluid spray shots! Shot oil out the exhaust for 20 feet or more! The Owner must have poured oil into the plug hole before it was stored 15 years ago. Finally got it cleared out and no more oil fouling. Now to sort out the carb...will idle and rev up with enrichner on, but won't idle with it off. Enrichner lever "down" = enrichner "on" correct? Also need to free up the clutch discs which are stuck.
  4. I don't believe the rings were stuck to begin with, just sprayed some oil in for insurance. I was hoping to get by without doing the top end. I can see still some cross hatching on the cyl walls thru the exhaust, and what I can see of the rings look ok. Any Idea what the compression should be?
  5. Trying to start this basket case after rebuilding carb and putting back together. Will hit a time or two with help from starter fluid but then plugs immediately are oil fouled, with excess oil leaking from exhaust port. I'm guessing the wd40 and oil i put in the plug hole to free the rings may be the problem? The bike had been sitting for 15 years. I got 110# compression (cold), spark, and fuel. If there is excess oil in the bottom end, how to get it out? Or any other suggestions? TIA
  6. From 1999 to 2005, an R6 is an R6 regardless of any other letters designated. They have 2 headlights. The next lower model for those years was the 600R (one headlight). From 2006 on a totally new model R6 was added, and the 2005 model continued as the R6S, and the 600R was continued also, giving a total of 3 600cc rockets, not counting the FZ6 standard model.
  7. If memory serves me right, the "S" designation didn't appear till 2006 and was essentially the 2005 R6 continued as the new version R6 was added with new frame, engine etc. The 600R was esentially the "old" R6 of the late 90's which was continued after the "new" R6 was added etc. They are all "race" versions with different times of release. They are not meant to be comfortable, but to go fast. If you want to race or go fast, get one, if you want to be comfortable and just want to go plenty fast enough, get a Fazer, SV650, Versus etc. Even the Fazer tops out at 140 mph!

Thanks for the reply Oldgit, hopefully I won't have to find out soon. I looks like it would be very close on the cylinder. I'm trying to get it running for a friend, delivered as a basket case! Looking into the exhaust and spark plug holes I can see what looks like cross-hatching on the cylinder walls, but it is pretty rough and irregular looking. The bike only shows 5,000 miles on the clock, but I'm wondering if someone has been into the motor already. Will try a compression test tomorrow, and see if it will fire up.

Is it necessary to remove the engine to do a piston replacement on an RT3?
  10. Moved to Enduro/Off Road Section
  11. New to the forum, need some info. Have an RT2 or 3? VIN RT1-131547 manufacture date 8/72. Looking for carb spec info. Specs from Yamaha parts fiche say float height 8.5mm for RT2 and 21.4mm for RT3? Which do I have and how is it measured? (sliding dual floats) TIA
