Bike oil is a big rip off. i can't see any reason why car oil can not be used, cars are becoming more mechanically advanced ,developing more power and reving much higher in some cases reving as high as some performace bikes. Motorcycle oil is SG rated this is old hat in car oils, look at the very few if any still available car oils with SG spec they are for older cars of lower capabilities which have high millage. I am of the under standing as long as you dont use ecomony oil or oil that is too thin car oil will not be a problem with clutch slip, but this is personal choice. If motorcycle oil was cheeper and in 5ltr containers I would buy it. The price is higher because they sell less of it and low sales means low profit unless you raise the cost.

You are pos right but if you look at the spec req in your manual it will not be very high and will not state it a synthetic or mineral is req. Nearly all m/cycle oils r SG rated this is clased as a low grade oil in car terms,an oil used for very old vehicles and not found anymore because car engine technology has come along way since SG and so has the oil. The oil now has to cope with very high reving sports and turbo charged engines hense oil grade SL. The way im seeing it is that if my bike recomend a spec of SG I will not put in anything less but an SH or SL is a higher spec so better protection. The only prob I see is the clutch if used ecconomy oils with improved addatives.

With a lot of research on the web re car verses motorcycle oil I now use Havoline premium 15/40 and change every 1500 to 2000 miles.(from ASDA) Not sure wether Im doing the right thing tho but the TDM seems to be smoother on it. Tried Halfords fully synthetic motorcycle oil once and it made the clutch slip. mac

funny u say that I always use shell with the exception of my last 2 refills. As I hate putting money into the theiving coffers of that robbing bastard Brown I filled with Sainsbury's @ 79p. But I have noticed a dop off in performace. Mac
