  1. It's been this way since I bought it, and it has seemed to run fine. I was just curious if I'd be better rejetting in the long run, but from what I can tell, it's not that big of a deal. I'm also welding on a slightly more restrictive muffler than the basically straight pipes that are on now. So...
  2. exactly what I needed to know. thanks drewpy. interesting about the dishwasher too...

You could compare part numbers on this site. They also sell most of the parts... though at a premium compared to ebay. It's helped me a ton with my xs400... http://www.nwvcp.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/2/Yamaha.aspx
  4. So I bought the bike with the crankcase and associated covers painted black. No bueno. I have since picked up an unpainted crankcase and all needed covers, unpainted. But they're all filthy, not to mention, my heads are very dirty as well. Any recommendations for cleaning said parts? Drewpy- how did you get your restored XS to look so perfect? (she's a beaut by the way!) Was the engine painted after cleaning? If so, what paint? Thanks all!
  5. Right. Definitely keeping the side panels, and I checked fitment- it would work, I'll just have to cut off part of the airbox holders. Only thing is, since the previous owner removed the side covers (and mounting brackets on frame!!) I'll have to weld on something to hold the side covers. But it's doable.

You're in the wrong section my friend. Classics= 15-20+ years old.
  7. Is that so? well this adds another twist! was going to hang the battery in the battery box with no air filters attached. don't think it would fit between the pods. oh well. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Thanks drewps!
  8. While I have the carbs open I was wondering if y'all thought it would be necessary to rejet seeing as I'm going to be sticking with the pod filters and gutted 2-into-1 exhaust. It has the stock 135/42.5 jets on right now. On a side note I found a pair of oem carb diaphragms for $20ish. (cheapest I found was $150 EACH on ebay) Might be able to get a couple more...anybody need any?
  9. Found it, "Last Call" by Dixie Witch. Thanks though!
  10. Hey all, neat vid of course, but I have got to get a hold of this song! Anybody know who does it? Seems along the lines of Satriani and other guitar soloists. [url=]

Ok, well I found a wiring harness with a flasher relay on ebay. Might as well go this route, as it's incredibly cheap. Thanks for the help though.

Thanks mervin, good advice. drewps, right, I found the part, but I also need the connector that plugs into the relay. I'm assuming it's something that I just need to splice into the turn signal circuit. In other words, I have a circuit, and I will soon have a relay, but how do I connect them? (what part?)
  13. bznchris replied to bznchris's post in a topic in Classics
Ok, I think I see where it possibly went. Going to need to replace this part along with the relay. Is there a name or part number I could look up? Can't see it in any fiche.

Installing new turn signals today, and found that the previous owner had done away with the flasher relay. Soooooo, shopping around, I see that the relay plugs into something. What would this something be? And where would it be located. Whatever it plugs into is missing as well... Thanks
  15. Yep, it's funny. I'm not sure I should even be calling this bike an xs400 anymore. I'll have to think up a new name for it.
  16. Nevermind, found my answer. Looks like I get to modify an airbox and filter!
  17. OK. I just received an airbox as I was planning to do away with the cone filters. Went to test fit the airbox and found that the rear brake reservoir is completely in the way. So, now I can assume the previous owner either welded that part on, or used a frame from another year. Did any other years have a rear disc brake, and if so, where is the reservoir located? Here's a pic: I'm really starting to think it would've been easier to cafe out a stock bike, rather than continue with the previous owner's modification.
  18. Ah, thanks Runningdog!
  19. Yes, I think the only original part of this bike anymore is part of the frame. The reason for needing such long shocks is the tail being chopped, and when compressed, the tire could possibly hit the tail light, or more exactly, the bottom of the tail: Also, I found these. Seems like they ought to work. Thoughts anyone? Edit: think they're for HD... http://www.jpcycles.com/search/productdetail?sku=701-039&N=274910&Ntt=&Ntk=&Ne=755118&Nao=150&Ns=DefaultSort&fitment=1&brand=0&results=100 Second Edit: Though thinking about it, I wouldn't be surprised if the shock mounts were modified-they look like it. Can anyone tell me the width of your mounts for comparison? Maybe HD shocks will work...
  20. In the middle of rebuilding my xs400, and noticed my left rear shock started leaking. I was going to replace them eventually, but guess I get to do it now! I know the shocks currently on there aren't stock, and they seem much bigger than the stockers too. I think I'll have to stick with the oversized shocks as they provide clearance for the chopped tail. So, can anyone tell me what options I have for a similar sized set? Thanks! Edit: I measured a little more precisely, and found the shocks are 14.5" eye to eye. I wouldn't mind going with a 14" shock to help give the chain a little more clearance (has been rubbing the swingarm with no weight on the seat). any recommendations? or at the very least, can anyone identify what bike/brand these shocks come from? I'm having a hard time finding replacements.

Ah, now what would I do without you, drewpy? looks like I have some welding to do! (sigh)
  22. *guilty* that is quite the peashooter, by the way!

Hey again, got yet another question about the project! When I bought the bike, the previous owner had removed the side covers and air box, and used just cone filters on the carbs. i plan to go back to an air/battery box, with side covers. I've ordered the air box, along with a set of side covers. But I don't see where the side covers would attach to the bike. Do they attach to the airbox? If not, it's possible the previous owner removed the part that the cover attaches to. Would anyone be able to post a pic of where they attach? I have all the manuals, but most are for '82 and up, after the design of the side covers was changed and I can't seem to find a description or pic of the side covers... Thanks all!
  24. and armyofda12mnkeys, looking closer at those peashooters, I don't think you would have a problem with restriction at all. don't know what I was thinking...
  25. You could probably get those to work. It looks like the outlet on those mufflers might constrict exhaust flow though; I'd probably stay away from them myself. And yes, oil filter/drain plug issues are affected by the placement of the pipes. The previous owner of my bike modified the pipes into a 2 into 1 system and one of the pipes runs directly across the oil filter leaving no room to remove the filter. But stock pipes retain access to the oil filter/drain plug, so if you've still got the stockers you should be fine.
