xs400 - MAC exhaust - anyone with experience?
hmmmmmmmm. stainless steel would be nice since they're getting covered by exhaust wrap. I'll have to look into that.

appreciate it, drewpy. 36 euros to ship one of those little mufflers stateside though! ouch! I guess I'm more looking for a set of pipes that would allow access to the oil filter. I could weld the muffler I have onto them.

xs400 - MAC exhaust - anyone with experience?
The previous owner modified the stock exhaust into a 2 into 1 style. However, he didn't think of oil filter cover access when he did so. So as it is now, I have to remove the exhaust to change the oil. And I'm not liking that. I did a little searching for complete 2 into 1 systems and found this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150391795363&crlp=1_263602_263622&ff4=263602_263622&viewitem=&guid=19c3d9971250a0b582e041e0ffda7233&rvr_id=&ua=WVF%3F&itemid=150391795363 Has anyone tried one of these? How is the fit? How is the sound? Thanks!

Couldn't answer that at this point. I'm still very new to this bike, and bikes in general really. Thanks for the good info though.

carburetor options for 81 xs400 and other issues
Hey all, I recently picked up an 81 xs400 that the previous owner had begun converting to a cafe racer. I'm continuing with the conversion, but need to straighten out some other issues first. One cylinder will fire when in higher rpms but not while idling. I thought this would be an issue with the main jet, but after a thorough cleaning of the carbs, it still happened. Then I turned to the leaky exhaust, fixed the leaks, and it still happened. I have noticed that the diaphragm of the corresponding carb has some pinhole leaks, so maybe at idle there isn't enough vacuum for it to run? Anyways, replacement diaphragms are as expensive as complete used carbs, so i was considering other options as far as new carbs- aftermarket? The head also leaks oil substantially, could this contribute to the problem? And yes, the cylinder is getting spark. Second, I'm having charging issues. After riding for 20 minutes or so, the battery will completely lose it's charge, and the bike will die in lower rpms and not have enough juice to start back up. I replaced the battery thinking I had a bad one but it still happens. AC generator problems? And I have all the manuals associated with this bike, but i'm having a hard time pinpointing the exact cause of these problems. Any help or ideas would be appreciated! Chris

'81 XS400 electrical issues
Hey all! New here and I recently picked up this winter project. I've done quite a bit to it since I bought it a couple weeks ago, but it still has a long way to go. What I'm having a problem with right now is the battery staying charged. It's basically draining faster than I can charge it. I would assume this is a coil or mag problem as I couldn't find any shorts. Any ideas are appreciated. And here's the bike in it's current state -chris
