1980 DT175 runs full throttle at idle
I took the carb off and adjusted the float, it was about 1mm too high (so was at 22mm). I set it to 21mm but it's still dripping fuel. Then set it to 20mm and still dripping fuel. The float seems to be working and the little nipple that the float actuates is moving just fine (i take it that is what let's the fuel into the bowl??). By the way i can start it and keep it going as long as I stay on the throttle at least a little bit, but I do need a bit of ether to get it started - i'm guessing this happens because it's getting flooded out, from the dripping fuel problem. any ideas?

1980 DT175 runs full throttle at idle
Yup this was the issue - slide was all the way up so fuel was just dumping in. It's still dripping fuel though so next is to check the float height (should have checked it when i had it off).

1980 DT175 runs full throttle at idle
So I finally got my DT to start up (after spraying a little ether in the intake), but it's idling at full throttle. It is dripping gas when I turn the gas on so I'm thinking my float is not set correctly in the carb. My question is would incorrect float set cause both fuel spillage (from the little nipple on the back side of the carb) and running full throttle at idle? I'm also wondering if the needle in the carb is not closing the jet where the fuel comes into the carb..

1980 DT175 What kind of oil should i use?
What kind of oil should i use for this bike? I have a manual that says "Yamalube, or two-stoke oild labeled "BIA certified for service TC-W", or alternately I could use 10w30. Can i just use regular 2 cycle oil you can find at an auto parts store?

1980 DT175 Carb Issues?
To adjust the float I unscrewed the "cap" where the throttle cable goes into the top of the carb and removed the slider (with the pin) and the spring that keeps the slider pushed down. Then I took the bottom of the carb off to adjust the float by bending the tang... is that what you mean by "spring loaded pin uncompressed"? Assuming the answer to my question above is yes then i'll go ahead and check for the worn ring

1980 DT175 Carb Issues?
Hi, I am new to working on motorcycles so please bear with me. I picked up a 1980 DT175 for a couple hundred bucks last week and have been trying to get it running. I cleaned and refilled the gas tank, drained and refilled crankcase oil and 2 stroke engine oil, cleaned air filter box, took the carb off and, cleaned it out and reset the float height according to service manual (20mm+-2.5mm). I put everything back together and when i try to start it, it it'll sputter sometimes but never start. I do have spark (tested with in garage with light off), i have air since airbox is clean (no filter right now the old one rotted away), not sureif engine is getting fuel though. As you will see in the pictures below there is a brass nipple coming out of the bottom of the carb and not sure if it's supposed to have a hose on it going to somewhere. After trying to start it for a few minutes fuel starts to pour out from this nipple. Am I missing a hose or is this supposed to be open like this? Thanks, Tone Carb Pic 1 Carb Pic 2
