  1. Could possibly have a 80cc barrel on it? Making it that bit quicker? Imo it's neither a moped nor a scooter, as it has no pedals, nor is it a stepthru machine. However in Britain 50cc motorbikes are often called mopeds. You will have to check with your local authority how they class it.
  2. I have a rare yamaha release note that was issued to dealers when monoshocks were brought in in '78. It states that you can.get a softer spring, and a stiffer spring. From memory I.think the stiffer spring is shared with the RD 400. I am in the.process of moving so will clarify when I can. On a standard spring without a jackup kit it's not uncommon for my lardy arse to introduce the wheel to the back mudguard. I am pushing 15 stone mind...
  3. I'm thinking 77 -78 aircooled yz though, with the chain in the right place. Theyre a bit pricey, plus I.have the bits to do it. The other option is either a yamaha blaster engine in one of my 175 frames, or an rt180. But I'm not convinced the rt would be worth the aggro.
  4. Tell the dvla ive changed the engine number. And use it for enduros. Its a 125 frame too...
  5. I know what your saying Paul. Thats for yamadan to worry about. Anything is possible, whether it's worth it is a matter of opinion. I'm tempted to put a yz 125 engine in a dt mx frame ive got,
  6. That said theres nothing stopping you putting a yz engine in a dt. if you do your homework and get the right one they bolt straight in. But with more horses, on the more modern yz's at least, you get better suspension than on a dt.

Aahh well done on the mot. There will be tyres out there. May.be an obscure make though, but tbh the old dt wont be.pushing a tyre to its limits. I think the bloke at tyre finder is called Mick. Very very helpful.
  8. Woah, thats a very open ended question. What years? A 1978 dt is very different to a 2006 yz
  9. Try green laning on legal byways. That always goes down splendidly with ramb-liars.

Nice work mate, dunno on the handlebars. How bent is bent? The tyres should be easy enough on the back at least, ive got conti tkc 80. Vintage tyres or tyrefinder are both useful places to start.
  11. Hmmm, forced.induction on a DT
  12. Ill give you £239.99 for it and a crate of beer. So yes, get it.
  13. Ken is right, you dont have to redline it everywhere, but it is more fun! I think.everyone should ride a KTM 300 exc once in there lives.
  14. ^Clearly never ridden a two stroke^
  15. Make rim replacement easier. Older bikes tend to have their own offset/spacing. This has an effect on how the.holes in the dimples are drilled on the rim. The angle differs from rim to rim. For example compare the front hub of a dt 175 to another bike with a 21" rim. The front hub is concentric, having shorter spokes on the drum side. This affects spoke lengths, and therefore angles. Use the wrong hub and the spokes will me fractionally bent at the nipples, and under tension this is not good. The same goes for the rear. From memory A dt 175 has the same length spokes both sides, modern bikes have much smaller hubs, as no drum. Again meaning the angle is different. If your new rim comes with no.holes you will have to get a wheel building company to drill them to your hubs.
  16. In theory fitting a wider rim narrows the tyre when fitted, as it stretches the tyre over the rim it loses height and a little bulbousness. However, is your supplier certain your rim will fit your hubs? As modern mx/enduro hubs are all spaced the same to
  17. Go on then, tell us your secret. 5 powerbands? WR200 motor?
  18. Dt engines are always rattly. I was amazed how smooth my.rs was in comparison. I think merv has already cleared up the oil situation....
  19. Any motorbike specific 4 stroke engine oil in the gear box. And a half decent two stroke oil. Dont be putting car oil in the gearbox. The clutch wont like it.
  20. Ok, on my 175 the oil light comes in neutral, so you know the bulb works. Does it go out in gear? If the tank is full of two stroke oil, you may have a dodgy connection or sender in the tank. This is where clear oil pipes from the pump to the carb are useful... Because you can see if theres bubbles or oil going to the carb. If you black oil pipes you can pull the pipe off the carb and see if there is oil there. Id be reluctant to put oil in the tank as your bike is probably jetted for autolube, and will run lean if you do. Whip the pump cover off, make sure everything is rosy.
  21. AC10's are a great off road tyre, but not great on wet tarmac. But as long as you remember this you should be ok. 14-16psi off road and 25psi on road. Big licks will wear them out quick on road, and if you run low pressure on the road for a long time say goodbye to them! And as for wet grass, let me know when you find a solution, I'm still looking!
  22. This happened this afternoon after a long day trying to get my greenlaner running, after finding it had low compression I ended up swapping engines from my newly acquired restoration project. After reassembling the side casing having adjusted the clutch, I refilled it with a jug of oil. Sump plug was still on the bench.
  23. Most bikes with a fairing are like that.lads. Think of a sports bike.
