  1. i prefer a newly laid streatch of road (say about a year old) in about 2:30 in the morning nice and smooth with a few sweeping bends leading to a nice long straight so you can hit close to top speed then slow down to some nice bends, but then sometimes i love the nice narrow country lanes up my way with sharp bends leading over a bridge to a long straight. just depends how i feel at the time....oh and matlock bath is a good ride
  2. well the pitbike engine im looking at is a oil cooled 125cc 15bhp tunable to 17bhp. but it uses a 140cc bottom end so i was going to get a 140cc barrel/piston and stage 3 tuned head with matching carb to get it to 19+ bhp , sounds good if not a little naughty but the engines are notorious for being high maintenance and unreliable. nice offer though defiantly something to think about im very tempted but im just comparing the engine iv found to others, to compare the pro's and cons and try and make my mind whilst i raise the funds, i wouldnt mind getting a 2 stroke for the power but im not sure how reliable they are. im looking for a good mix of power and reliability but it has to pass as a 125 learner legal till i can save up for my direct access, i mean im 23 and have 7 years riding experience (not allot yet but more than some) and i dont see the need to get a massively big engined bike. i just want to be able to overtake a bus or lorry more safely plus im getting a little tired of struggling to get over 40mph up a hill on a dual carriageway. im also thinking of selling it and i think id get more for it if it had a better engine but at the same time i need to be able to ride it.
  3. hi all as some of you know im building a xvs bobber and soon il be needing an engine. but im not sure what to get, 4 stroke or 2 stroke? im in need of a 125cc engine but im wanting to be able to hit at least 70mph which means more bhp but at the same time i need it to be reliable. iv had my eye on a pitbike engine for some time now but its going to cost me about £1000 to be able to bolt it in and go, to be honest its not really suited to what im looking for but it is brand new and the parts are cheep plus its easily tunable! so my question is what engine would you recommend? note that il need everything to make it work like loom, reg/rect ect ect. and my budget cant go over £1000. cheers . Paul .

i had an xvs dragstar 125 called donna
  5. if only there was an answer to that question. it could last 2 days or 2 years no one can tell due to it all depends on a number of factors like how old the bike is, how aggressive you ride, how much force is created at the point of ignition. ect. ect. as iv said m8 find out who carried out the work and get their opinion. with the boar being bigger, the piston needs to be bigger , but the boar of the head is smaller so you need to either get a better head (or get it machined to match) or see about a special gasket setup that allows you to use the original head. normally its just an extra thick gasket or a metal one that slightly increases the gap between piston and head to allow you to use original heads with board out barrels.
  6. im not too sure about the 535 but i have worked on a few 125's and the carb diaphram has always been connected to the slides so assuming that the 535 is just a bigger version of the 125 then yes it is that, that is the problem. best get some new ones and try it out (wont hurt to have a spare!) plus there known for disintegrating.
  7. did you just put a new standard piston in? if so then thats why it wont work! you will need a slightly bigger piston/rings so that you can get compression. the standard head should be ok but you will probably find that you will go through head gaskets like toilet paper. best thing to do is contact the previous owner and find out where he got the work done then ask them.
  8. im sure the point to the highway hawks is there loud! and that is the purpose of them .....to be loud. but im not too sure if you can get baffles for them can you open them up without having to drill or cut them? if they are what i think they are then they will be straight through pipes that have been designed without baffles and therefore you cant fit any. but then again im not too sure. but yeah great bargain! £60 !!!! WOW! could you post a pic up with them on? id like to see what the bike would look like with a nice set of pipes on it. oh just thought you could just pack them with the same stuff you get for pitbike exhaust cans, that will muffle the sound to a quieter level but shouldnt affect the tone. round my way no one is fussed about the noise as there are plenty of people going round on harlys with straight through pipes, or r1's with racing cans on them, but iv been to airshire (got family over there )and its totally different with it being a kinda "posh" area so i can see where your coming from.
  9. yeah it would need re-jetting and with the straight through pipe it will be loud! if you stick a 95 main jet in then see if you would need a bigger one (do a plug check) if you look on ebay for some exhaust wrap (think i got the black graphite roll) but dont use the stainless steal tie wraps as there crap youl be better off with some circlips and if you double wrap them round the chroma then it will look allot bigger! dont take the chrome covers off otherwise ul b left with a piddly bit of pipe lol. as to how much a stock set is.....i dont know i got quoted £400 for a brand new set but this was about 4 years ago.......best bet is have a look on ebay for a decent second hand set. but check for any corrosion .
  10. yeah you could do but you would need a new exhaust for the mot! plus you need to think how your going to attach them on safely. id say just chop off the silencers so you just have the pipes left then wrap them in exhaust wrap, that way you can use the dosh you saved to get them slipons to buy a new exhaust for the mot
  11. hi all iv had enough and want to get rid of my sachs roadster 125 iv rebuilt the bottom end and the bike has a full years mot and tax, it needs a new paint job, handle bars, brake lever, and top end to the engine (well just a cylinder head) iv recently bought a new exhaust and loads of other bits to try and get it going again e.g gasket set, timing sprocket, new crank ect, the original bottom end went 2 days after the mot so since then iv replaced the crank, conrods and pistons. but now the timing sprocket has broke and its going to cost £22 for a new one which i cant afford, plus it could do with a new cylinder head as one of the exhaust bolts has sheard off (iv seen one on e-bay for £30) so yeah iv just had enough of the misses having a go at me cause im out fixing the bike so its going! im either wanting to sell it (for a reasonable offer) or swap it for a decent working engine for my dragstar bobber project (preferably 2 stroke 125cc with loom and exhaust) so yeah post a message up if your interested. cheers. Paul.
  12. oh forgot to mention because the xvs dragstar engine is the same as the xv virago engine then with a little modification to the bike (the area behind the rear cylinder needs a little more room) you could stick a virago exhaust on, the only difference is the virago exhaust goes behind the cylinder and down to the bottom of the frame to then link to the side of the other exhaust, where as the dragstar's rear cylinder exhaust comes down the side of the bike to then link to the other exhaust. but the virago exhausts are cheaper than the dragstar ones! mine cost me a grand total of £198 for everything..brand new. but would cost me £400 for a dragstar one. so worth thinking about! plus the virago exhaust is easy to turn into a straight through single muffler pipe i know cause iv made one and it is loud! i put all them hairdryers on steroids to shame! lol
  13. its a 90 main jet for a mikuni carb, if you stick a 95 or 97 main jet in it then it will be fine they can cost anywhere from £1 to £7 i generally go to the powersports near me and they charge £1 a jet, just take your main jet out and take it with you so you can be sure what your getting cause they do 2 tipes of main jets for mikuni carbs, a hexagonal and round one and you want the round one. plus you will see the number stamped into the top of the jet. as to exhausts you could chop the mufflers off and put a slipon on it but you will still need a standard exhaust for the mot. and i looked into getting some custom exhausts made and it would cost anywhere between 300 and 400 quid but you can get some highway hawk slash cuts for 300!!
  14. yeah id have to agree it sounds a little fishy that the cam "shaft" has gone b4 the chain normally they last forever! are you sure its the cam and not the crank? its more likely the crank shaft has gone then the cam shaft!
  15. want to know something wierd? thats exactly how the 125 rides, would of thaught bigger engine = more torque and speed but from what you just said its exactly the same lol

    Yamaha Dragstar

yes but it is underneath the bike, so if you try and undo it stood up looking down on the bike then it will be clockwise to undo it, unless your underneath it, then it will be anti-clockwise. but either way get a decent ratchet set on it to make sure you have a good contact on the bolt. plus with the ratchet set, you can just set it and not have to worry about direction lol tighty righty lefty loosey

hi there and welcome to the forum the drain plug will be a little stiff but if you put an extension on the end of your handle say 3-4 foot then tap the end with a hammer that should give you the leverage you need to take it off. (any metal tube will do) and you want to turn it clockwise. (its a normal thread just upside down) let us know how you get on .Paul.
  18. wonder what my exuse is then lol
  19. the intake valve is on the carb end .
  20. ahhhhhh you didnt say it was in ilkeston lol thought you ment opposite the tesco in alfreton lol
  21. nope still dont know where it is lol il get me m8 to take me down sometime yeah it is a bit bad.....as i said iv heard of it but havent seen it, unless your on about that car shop thats down the side street past the bus station?
  22. ok m8 im always checking the forum so if you wanted pm me a time to b on and we can go through it all in one go catch u l8r m8 good luck
  23. take the caliper off and there should be 2 bolts to undo then whip the pads out (take note of where everything goes!) push the pistons in, put new pads on, put bolts back in then put caliper back on bike, pump brake lever till all is working then bed them in.
  24. the idea is to make it as light as posible! so take anything you dont need off like fairing, lights, anything that adds wheight then get a racing exhaust or straight through pipe and get the carb re-jetted (so that its race tuned) take it somewhere to get it dynoed and a power comander fitted to suit then put some slicks on it and lower the suspention slightly.....think thats about it ...oh yeah put brain to one side and ride the thing!
