  1. What if all this is ok could it be timing?
  2. Carbs have been fully rebuilt and cleaned already
  3. 78 XS 400. When I go full throttle no matter what rpm/gear at about 6,000 rpms it sputters/hesitates for about 2-300 rpm then pulls fine after that, does this mean I am lean or rich or something else? My idle is perfect and the throttle response from 1200 rpm+ is awesome right now. Thanks!
  4. Anyone have a link as to where to get a 17T front gear??
  5. Well it was not the battery, the short drained the battery so I stuck a charger on it for 2 hours and put 70 miles on the bike today and the 7 different times I needed it to start it started fine. Thanks for the help guys.
  6. Yea battery is not holding a good charge, I get about 30 seconds of cranking before it dies
  7. It does but it did not blow, I finally got the bike started and its putting out a good voltage to power everything, I think I may have fried a cell in the battery as it does not last as long as it used to.
  8. Like title says, I had the charger on my battery and moved the gas tank on top (I know) went to start the bike and it started but as soon as it did the gas tank shifted and sparks flew from the terminals and the bike died, I still have spark but the battery is VERY weak now and it wont turn over for very long before dieing. Did I fry me battery or something else? It wont start now either. Also all turn signals are still bright along with the break light, someone help me out please...

I still cant find a good oil to use, should I stay away from Castrol GTX (normal oil, not semi or sys oil) 20w-50 car oil? What do you recommend that I can get local at a parts store to use?

  12. Yea I currently have stock gears, 16 frt/39 rear, I am putting on a 17t front so should I go more teeth on the rear or less? I think I need a 37t rear right? I dont want to change the chain just yet so if I can get away with a 37 rear then I will do it.
  13. I want to get a tad less rpms when on the HWY at 80mph, anyone know where I can get either gear at to lower rpms/get a tad more top speed? I just bought a 17T front sprocket, what should I put in the rear?? As far as I know the gear in the back is stock.
  14. Bump. Just bought a 17T front sprocket, what should I put in the rear?? I want to lower my revs a bit on the interstate. 78 xs 400 stock gears right now
  15. Thanks a lot, that listing is not the right part number but I pulled my part number 383-16321-00-00 and ordered 7 of them for $54, not bad, hopefully this fixes my issue.
  16. Normal Castrol 20w-50, I took the clutch out and there really is not a lot of material left on them but then again I dont know what new ones looks like so I cant compare. Also I need to know if the clutch springs from a 80+ xs 400 will work in my 78, I only have 4 springs where the 80+ bikes have 6 but I think they are the same springs?
  17. I cannot find any except a set thats $135 shipped, I know there are cheaper ones out there, my clutch is slipping and its def the friction plates, anyone know a place to get them cheaper than that?
