1980 DT 250 Carb problem
Hey Guys, Thanks for your help. Got it sorted, there were 2 probs.. 1 - didn't tighten up the seat properly - fuel was seeping around it. 2 - more adjustment on the tang - i was doing it correctly but the seepage was confusing the issue. Good calls from both of you - didn't consider that the floats mightn't have been floating, that suggestion made a lot of sense - however found both to be OK. Anyway took it out to a bush block at the weekend - gave it a good workout and was very happy with the result - first real riding i'd done on it. the bike was given to me after having spent 5 years in a paddock (where it stopped) then a further 5 years in someones back yard - when i got it had no seat or plastics, many dents in the tank, broken rings/piston seized clutch, bearings seized... the list goes on.. Cheers Mark

Fuel/Oil mixture for 1980 DT 250
Hi, Am restoring a 1980 DT250 and cannot find a oil tank... until I do (and am guessing I won't) am running on pre mix 2 stroke at around 20 to 1. (have also disabled the oil pump). No sure if this is the correct ratio - but working on the premise that more is better especially as I've just replaced the piston and rings. Is this mix OK - any suggestions? Thanks Mark

1980 DT 250 Carb problem
My Mikuni carburettor is intermittently leaking fuel through the overflow outlets. I have replaced the needle and seat and adjusted the float level several times without a great deal of success. I thought I had a win after adjusting the centre tang to be parallel with the tangs that the floats touch. When I reinstalled no fuel was leaking, took it for a short ride and still all OK after. Left the fuel tap on to see if it would stay that way - it did for an hour, then started leaking slowly. Tried again today and it started leaking as soon as i turned the fuel on. I don't understand why it would change - could understand if I hadn't replaced the needle and seat (which seals fine when I blow through the fuel pipe and actuate manually. Incidentally - may be important - problem seems to be less when I adjust the float level in the 'wrong' direction. by this i mean bending it down rather than up (up should cut off the fuel earlier. Am wondering if the floats are floating properly - but all looks pretty good, nothing obvious to my untrained eye! Below is a link to the Babbits online part diagrams - to see the exploded view of the carby you need to select Yamaha/Motorcycle/1977/ DT250D - then select the Carb view for the 250D.. 1980 DT250 Seized Clutch
Thanks for the advice - much appreciated. I've done as you've suggested. Took a while but got all the plates off and cleaned up. Working well now. Wondering what the torque setting is for the bolts holding the clutch plates together. There are 6 of these bolts in total - going through springs into the back of the clutch. Also would like torque settings for the Cylinder nuts and head nuts please? Having a great time trying to get this old bike going. Piston and rings were damaged - expecting to get the head back with new piston tomorrow and think might have a chance of firing it up over the weekend - woo-hoo! Thanks again, Mark

1980 DT250 Seized Clutch
The clutch seems to have seized on the 1980 DT 250 I'm trying to resurrect. I've only just got the bike but it's obvious that it hasn't been touched for a few years. Think it was exposed to the elements for a deal of time too... I found some water in the crankcase - together with something that may have been oil. I've removed the clutch cable (which was seized too) and tried to move the push lever manually as if i was disengaging the clutch - won't move. It will move backwards about a quarter of a turn (which seems normal). I've used some multi-grips to try and turn it - but haven't put too much pressure on - in case i break something. Not sure what the next step should be... is there any danger if i hit the push lever with a wooden block/hammer to try and loosen up the mechanism? If this doesn't work do i need to split the crankcase or can i just remove the RHS rear cover to expose to the clutch. Appreciate any advice you may have...
