Liked this
Saw this parked up while I was out on the push bike a couple of weeks ago. In really good order, 10k on the clock, and not seen one before. Lovely bike, in unrestored original condition

First time out for ages
I was in Matlock around 11 till 12 lunchtime, had coffee and a bite to eat at the kiosk at the top end on the river side. It was very quiet, only saw a few bikes.

After market down pipes
Make sure to have a real good look at the old and the new to compare and make sure that that the depth of the flanges are the same. Always use new gaskets when going to the trouble of replacing parts etc, same for O rings. Dont chuck away the old flanges, it may be that youll have to fit them onto the new pipes to get the correct seal. I had to do that once when I fitted a ss system, the new flanges were crap

First time out for ages
Managed to get out on the fazer on Friday, first time out on the bikes for some while. Rode through Derby and up the A52 to Ashbourne, through Ashbourne and on up to Buxton. Roads in surprisingly good condition, lovely sunshine. Brief stopover in Buxton, then back out and across the dales to Matlock for more refreshment, then back home. 140 miles in total on the day. The clutch mod that I did earlier this year is working good for me, and i've dropped the front end another 10mm without any detriment, making the ride a little more comfortable for me but the carpal on the right hand seems to be returning after 20 minutes or so. Ive had to lay off the bikes for some time this year, as my youngest lost her partner due to a bike accident in March, and now one of her best pals has just lost her partner in similar fashion last week. My wife of 36 years was welling up as I pulled off the drive on Friday. Weve had a shite year so far, and there have been times when ive felt utterly useless. There is no training for this sort of stuff, and every word/action has to be thought through first. I'm so pleased I gave up work last year, we've no income but the tele sales wallahs soon piss of when you tell em that Ive also been toying with idea of selling the virago, the upright riding position means i feel all the bumps/potholes more at the point where i fractured my spine last year, don't get that on the fazer as the riding position means the spine is curved

virago 1997 plate
535s have a good reputation for reliability. Its the finish you've got to look after. Before winter, seriously consider a thorough wash, dry, and a going over with ACF50 (or another similar corrosion inhibitor thats as good) Places like Custom Cruisers supply spot lamps etc plus the mountings. There is no shortage of suppliers for this stuff. As for the electrics, I would be surprised if heated grips/spots etc did not overwhelm the poor little battery in no time. I have ridden through every winter for the last 8 years on 125s, 600s, and a 750, and winter riding in the dark, and cold starting, takes its toll on the battery. I actually had 2 batteries for my yx600 and swapped them every week, then put the spare on trickle.

sunday drivers
Too many distractions in motor cars today. The more "features" they have, the bigger they get. Some now have to pull out and put the front wheels into the road j st to be able to see at junctions, cos the distance from the front bumper to the drivers seat is so long now

Metal shavings
As above, I wouldn't worry too much. If you ever seen the metal that sticks to one of those magnetic sump plugs, you'd have a cardiac. Its just normal. Years ago, we used to use flushing oil to wash out any crud before re-filling, but I think that practice is now long dead

Front fork setup?
Wonder if anyone could guide me on this? I fitted a shortened rear shock linkage last year to cater for my lack of leg length, happy with that. I also dropped the front forks by 10mm, but wonder what the impacts will be if I drop the front another 20mm to match the drop on the rear? Are there any safety implications to watch for in handling? Thanks

Carb vent hose to air pod
If youve got the service manual, you need to be looking at the pages for air filter, carb, and fuel system together. I know its abit of a jigsaw, but it should become clear which pipes go where
