2003 fzs600, it has a really annoying fairing noise above 20mph but I can not work our where is is coming from, any ideas?

Just returned to biking after more than a few years and got myself a FZS600 2003, very nice but I have an intermittent noise from the engine (approx every 20 miles or so). Noise is not mechanical and does not depend on engine speed, it only lasts for a few seconds and sounds a bit like a starter motor. Any ideas?
