  1. Thanks for that, Battery disconnect didn't work Removing the plug from the TPS made the speedo jump up to 3k, when I plugged it back in it held at a steady 5.5k? The yamaha garage told me that the speedo jumping to 2k was an error code, but "the download was taking a long time" so he couldn't tell me what it meant. Time to start surfing for the error codes.
  2. The speedo gearing has gone on my xj600n (97) so Monday I popped it up on the paddock stands took the front wheel off, removed the gearing then found out that it was the wrong one, put it all back together again then came to put it back up the drive and it wouldn't start? The bike turns over, the battery is fine, all lights work, all fuses are fine but no spark? the strange thing is that when in neutral and the ignition is on, every 5 seconds the rev counter goes up yo 2K for 2 seconds then drops back down again? I had the AA out to it this afternoon and he couldn't find anything, so unless I can sort it, I will have to get them to take it to my local Yamaha dealer (ouch).
  3. I had a similar problem with my xj600, I Didn't have an idle problem but I was getting oil leaking from the air filter drain, when I opened the air box it contained light brown sludgy oil and a now knackered brand new K&N air filter On the bottom of your Air box there is a little hole that lines up with the center of the air filter, on the underside I have a little pipe that does not connect to anything (clear about an inch long) when I put the box back on the pipe got bent over blocking the hole, I can only assume that the hole is there to stop a vacuum forming inside the Air box or some other technical reason that only a well trained grease monkey would understand. Long story short, unblock little hole, oil stopped coming out. Hope this helps.
  4. I have checked this morning, no washer plate on the bottom of the manifold, and no washers in the rubbers at the top of the manifold. The only thing left is the carb sliders, I am struggling to understand where these are, do they restrict the throttle piston from moving back? How do I find them? Thanks.
  5. I assumed it would be the last one, but looking at the picture they are not there, neither is the second one. I will have a look for the first type tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.
  6. I had my R reg xj 600 N restricted 18 months ago, today whilst fitting a new choke cable I got a bit curious. My understanding is that the official Yamaha restrictor kit was a set of washers that sat between the Carb and the top of the engine inside the rubber seals, or is it a complete replacement set of the rubber seals? If it is the later then fine, if it is separate washers then I paid ÂŁ200 for a useless piece of paper and I have been riding illegally for 18 months.

In the short term you could try running some carb cleaner through it, I got some Silkolene Pro FST and it seems to be helping a little, I also gave it a tank of Ultimate Unleaded. My big upset now is that I put a nice new K&N air filter in last service and the bottm 3/4 inch is soaked in oil

I have a 97 xj600n, there should be a hose running from the underside of the Air box on the left hand side, it should run over the top of the engine and down the back next to the fuel tank breather hose. Pic of my bike Mine does the same thing as yours but it is dripping all over the drive, from what I have read up on it could be something to do with a sticking carb pulling oil up into the air box. Do you have any rough running or Idle problems, I'm thinking of buying a second hand carb off ebay and reconditioning it then swappig it out, unfortunatley I commute daily on this bike so I don't have the luxury of having it off the road for a week or so.

Got it working, It was a corroded conector on the wire that runs from the Starter Relay to the Relay assembly at the assembly end. Suppose I should keep an eye on the relays as they do seem to attract muck even though they are under the fairing.

fuel : not even trying to turning over, so fuel is out of the equation fuel tap : assume related to above kill switch : I haven't check the kill switch with the multi meter but when the ignition is on and you flick the kill switch one of the relays clicks? The starter button is working because when you press it the oil light comes on.

Good luck with you test, I did my CBT last year with a friend from work, he got a brand new YBR for commuting to work on and still uses it now even after passing his A2, when your doing 110 mpg on roads that you can't go over 40mph on you can see his why he is resisting buying anything bigger. The only down side is that he's 6'2" and look an right T*T

The gremlins have been attacking my bike! Monday I took it out for a run and all was happy, Wednesday morning 8:30 need to be in Leeds (40min ride) for a training course at 9:30, turn on the ignition, Neutral light comes on, press the starter switch the oil light flashes on and nothing happens? I have all lights working, the battery is holding 12.5V, I have gone through the Haynes Manual and checked the side stand switch, the Clutch switch, the Diode, all the fuses, the starter relay is showing 14.5 ohms(which is within the specified range). The only thing that didn’t seem right from the Haynes manual it the starter relay does not click when I press the ignition switch. When I turn on the ignition with the key, I hear a click from one of the other relays but I never hear anything from the Starter relay? Any help will be appreciated.

Latest Update: I have given the old girl a tank full of Ultimate and a few hundred mill of Silkoline Pro FST and when she was running(not related) it did make a difference, everything seemed a little smoother and it kept it's revs to arround 1400. I think Yamahead is right, my xj is an R reg with only 11k on the clock (of which i put 3k on in the last 6 months) and I know for a fact that it sat in a garage for 18 months before I bought it, so there is a good chance that Carb is a little dirty.

I'm having the same problem on my xj600n, it does seem to have started since the weather got colder. Like yours my bike starts fine but runs a little rough, when I come to lights after a few minuets it will cut out. If i leave it 20 - 30 seconds then start it up again it will happily tick over at 1500 revs for the rest of my journey. I also thought it could have been carb freeze having had it before on my old Suzuki Intruder, but on this bike it has started doing it when im on my way home at night. I'm going to try some fuel addatives and carb cleaner to see if that helps, will post my results.
