  1. Brilliant cheers, ill look into that too. I'm going to be spraying the tank myself i think, much cheaper i would guess. Any idea how much a tank spray would be if i took it all back to bare metal? They'll give better results than me!
  2. Gotta love mechanical inuendos! anyway, i was told that the Rd350's were often know for this seal going, I've also seen quite a few seen quite a few DTR engines with similar so is probably your cuplrit.
  3. Ah, whenever i think of a DT with a DEP that noise rings through my ears. "Tinny" is the perfect word!
  4. Cheers drewpy, very useful. Only seem to have the classics on there as i guess there arnt too many people restoring DTR's yet but i'll drop them an email! Saw some nice decals for the Rd too. If i can get a complete set of fairings im getting them done in blue and getting the decals from here!
  5. Sounds like a battery issue. Buy yourself a "Trickle charger" like an optimate or something and get the battery on that for a few days.
  6. I don't know if anyone else has come across anywhere that does this or has any advice in general but here goes. I'm building a DT125R up from the ground. I've got almost all parts now and will be starting the build as soon as my logbook for the frame comes through. I've bought full new plastic set with new sticker kit. The sticker kit doesnt include the stickers for the tank that matches/meets the ones on the rad scoops. I'm going to be re spraying the tank and will want new stickers. Does anyone know what my best line of action is? Is there anywhere that would be able to get the stickers. I'll say, I have yet to try yamaha as i think they only would have part number for tank assy, but i dont actually have the parts book. If anyone has that it would be very useful. I'm guessing i should paint tank, apply decals ( if i can get them made) then lacquer? Andy
  7. I have to say that it obviously sounds very irresponsible the way you tell it, of the instructor to allow them to go on the road without changing gear. The CBT practice area should be well large enough for a ride to change gear so I have to say i find it hard to believe. I would also say that it's very hard to make someone ride a bike. Generally as soon as you let go of them they wiggle free and manage to escape. I mean everyone has the choice. If they are taking a CBT then they should have the confidence to say, I havnt ridden and geared bike and dont plan to on the road. I don't want to do it on a geared bike. I had a friend who had the same thing. He got on a geared 125 and wrote it off soon after getting on the road. He should have refused or at least complained. I hope your friend is ok and it doesnt put him/her off riding but I would suggest they find a different training school and ask for more training before getting on the road. It's a dangerous place out there, especially with all these drivers on their phones, reading books (seen it), smoking, eating, drinking, performing sexual acts (havnt seen it). If they're doing all those things ( not at the same time) then they arnt worried about looking out for bikes at junctions, overtaking, filtering.

    Gutted!

Get some ater repellant spray like ACF-50 or Muc Off do a version. Use it to protect bits that may rust. It supposedly puts a thin layer/film across the parts and repells water. Attracts dirt they say but it's better than rust. Good cover, Plenty of cleaning and polishing and you'll be fine. As for the theives, spread around the neighbourhood that your an axe weiding murderer and get a good lock. Someone posted up a nice demo on how to build a trip wire mech that utilises blank shotgun cartridges. It'll deafen the scoundrels and wake up everyone to chase them away!
  9. Perhaps you are, I had no rev counter either as it was the later DT RE but had ridden DT125R's with rev counters so could hear roughly how far she was. I'm glad my RD has a rev counter. I often find myself changing gear as it sounds high, when its at about 3k. Obviously thats only when the girlfriends on the back and I'm tryng to be responsible. Most of the time it's impossible not to change at 8 after 2.5-3k of powerband.
  10. This is true, i generally spend my time scroll through ebay and spending the money as i earn it!
  11. We'll whack on the new exhaust and see how it goes. What symptoms would leaking crank seals give? Loss of power, what else?
  12. Theres a litre of petrol chuked away then!
  13. 1.46 a litre I've seen down here in recent weeks. It's just dropped to below the 1.40 for the time being. When I'm cleaning parts in the garage with petrol I actually start thinking, there goes 50p!
  14. My apologies then, just seemed that way. Yeah they definitly are geared for offroad but even without playing with the gearing my standard DT125RE hit 84mph on it's clocks and I wouldnt have pushed it for the same reasons of not wanting to blow it up. If I'd swapped the zorst over or removed the CAT, fitted a 32mm delorto carb and 4dl CDI and 4DL barrel and head like suggested in another post i wonder what it would have reached. It's actually spurred me on to build another DTR. I've been scourring ebay for parts and have spent more money than i should, hence the sale of my 86 DT in the for sale section. But I'm going to make a 33bhp one if i can. Ive got a frame which turned up yesterday, just need to apply for V5. 4DL CDI a mate has who is selling me. I've got a pallet, yes a pallet of spares being delivered from scotland tomorrow. Clocks, headlight, tail light on numberplate bracket etc arrived yesterday too. Now looking for someone to powdercoat the frame and will start building! Will make a thread in projects soon. Will get a satnav and the go pro out once its done and see how wrong/right I am!
  15. I paid 1.50 for this heap of shat whilst at work and wanting to view the forums with ease. I cant make heads nor tails of it and havnt bothered since. If anyone works out how to use it then let me know.
  16. All over the place claiming DT's cant do a genuine 80! Haha! Wish i still had mine so i could wack thr go pro on and mount a sat nav.
  17. Ah, the much needed sarcasm! The Engines in TVR's and land rovers may well be the same but they'll be geard very different, tuned very different, as said before, extremely different weights, ride height, tyres, fueling, air intake etc etc. The TZR and DT use the same engine, full stop. Yes the belgarda runs a delorto 32mm carb but they are essentially the same but in different bodys. I personally didnt buy a "dirt bike and expect the same speeds as an rs". The Dt is a dual purpose trail bike. It was designed for the road with the ability to be able to ride well on green lanes and dirt tracks, not like a "dirt bike" or motocross which was designed for low speed, lots of power and enough suspension to jump the grand canyon! The point of the thread was a DT that will only do 65mph. For a DT as anyone who rides one will know, this is not its full potential. Whether they have been modded to do 100mph+ as some claim is another matter. I'm merely saying that they should be able to do more than that and expressing my surprise that a 600 in the same form will only just do 100mph.
  18. It seems amazing the small difference in top end speed between a 125 and a 600, it must be a huge aerodynamic factor. I mean the TZR125RR Belgarda model ( italian import) manages to put out 33bhp using the same engine as the DT125. They appear to be able to get on the plus side of 100mph without mods. My RD350 YPVS claims 120mph and i can see it happening although have only taken it to 100 on clocks myself and dont't plan to take it that fast, yet a 600 in enduro style will be "only good for 90-100 at a real push". I suppose it's physics really, the faster you go the more air resistance and those style bikes are designed to cut through the air like the sportier models. They do after all have the "radiator scoops" catching all that air and chucking at the rad/rads. I still maintain that any year dtr or RE should be able to do 75-80 if looked after, with only a few small mods from standard.
  19. Wow, what an intense thread. I hope I never have the misfortune of buying this bike!
  20. Not been on the forum for a while, glad to see you're still improving this Nev! Looking absolutely stunning mate! I've had the DT200WR out recently to get work done on that, will have to post up some pics and update my thread soon!
  21. Hi monkeyman. I believe on that model the servo needs a "stay" that fits to the frame and then the servo bolts to that. I was looking at buying a 1990 TZR a few weeks back and the guy had the servo but not the stay, apparently they fetch alot of money. If you get a parts manual from somewhere you should be able to see it. From what i imagine, you'd be better off getting someone with engineering skills to make you one up if they are that hard to come by. It's probably that yamaha never supplied them with the bike and sold them as an improvement due to regulations about 17 year olds like with the DT. Do you have the 3 wire servo or the 5 wire. I believe you need the 3.
  22. Yeah thats what I had imagined. They look bloody nice though!
  23. For engine oil you should not mix between synthetic, semi and natural. You ideally need to know whats in there. It shouldnt be a problem but i've always been told to avoid it. Fully Synthetic is always the best choice. As for gear oil. 10w40 as said before but s its running the clutch you dont want one thats too good or you could get clutch slipping. I use Yamalube. Its about 9 quid a litre from Yamaha dealers and you need 750ml so it's not bad. You're not gonna change it too often so its worth buying the better quality stuff. The spark plug should be a BR9ES plug, you'll get that from halfords, as with the 2-stroke oil. When changing the gear oil remember to have the engine warm and tilt the bike as it starts to trickle low to get as much out as you can. Do it into a clear container so you can see if there's any bits of anything in there. Remember to put the drain plug back in before you refill! haha. Good on you, lets keep these bikes in good condition and on the road!
  24. Forgot to turn the petrol on on my Dt in the early days, rode up the rode and it died. Walked it back before realising. Thought id killed it. Also another lack of petrol one where it was set to on and i gauged my fuel level by how many miles id done. Usually got about 115 before it needed to go to reserve. I was on about 80miles coming down a dual carriage way and it died. Pulled over thinking id killed it because i'd been ragging the tits off it. Turned out if i spend all the time in the powerbands i get less fuel efficiency! Who would have thought it! felt like a right rodney! My Bro has ridden off a couple of times with the disc lock still on thr front on his SR125, that was funny!
