So a long awaited update. How about a bent shift shaft? Yup, that appears to be one of the culprits.

I have a 1972 DT2 250 Enduro. It has only 4900 miles on it but ever since I rode it first gear slips, not all the time but the majority of the time. I've spoken to a few mechanics and their input was that the bike was ridden by someone who learned to ride on the bike. I'm guessing this was my brother who learned to ride on this bike when he was in high school. I'm contemplating doing the work myself. The clutch has a very short range to it in terms of grab and release (springs worn out?) and I figure if I'm going to do that I might as well as replace 1st gear as well. I've done minor work on the bike, carb rebuild, cleaned up the piston, etc. So here is the question… is this something I could/should attempt on my own? What is the difficulty factor, special tools etc.? Any tips, thoughts or special input? Thanks.

Hi Kelley, That is very cool! I am in the middle of the same type of project. I picked up my dad's '72 DT2 250 Enduro that he had bought brand new. He died in '78 and the bike has been sitting in storage since then. It has a mere 4K miles on it and I have been scrounging the web for parts as well. Here is what I have found... If you cannot find a part for your bike it is very possible that that part number was used on another model and another year but it is still the exact same part. For example, if you cross reference on part number 233-84115-60-00 you will see that it is a headlight rim used on many different models: see this link... http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y...4154-60-00.html If you dig further you will see that the first 3 digits change and the last 3 sets of numbers stay the same. This part was used on many different models. So when looking for parts don't look for parts according to your bike model, search for the last 3 sets of part numbers... "84115-60-00" not "233-84115-60-00". But before you buy the part be sure to then use http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/M...ycle/parts.html and cross reference the pictures of the parts.
