Sportster Fuel Tank Modification
I've seen xs400's for sale with the tank on so it can be done. If you can keep the vaccum tap on, keep it, otherwise go with the harley one and put an inline fuel filter on the fuel line. don't forget to blank off the vacumm pipe though! carbs are fine leave them if they work ok

carb diaphramps are either cracked or the slide is sticking, this prevents it rising under vaccum and from dropping for idle!!

newbie with XS 400 Special - won't start
if you have a smooth alloy points cover with plugs instaed of screw heads, you have TCI ignition. Ribbed with screws visible - points. check you are getting 12v to the suspect coil!

82 Maxim 400
I don't he's saying its jumping out of gear just that the clutch is slipping!! need to adjust the clutch at the actuator end, slacken off and screw lightly till stop and back off 1/4 turn and lock off. should also be 5mm slack at lever end. also check clutch cable, should be lubed every month or will fray and not return the clutch properly. btw

you could get a colortune kit. that way you can see a spark and also if it is burning ( good for adjusting carb mixture as well)

sounds like an air leak, check the rubber inlets for cracking and clean out the pilot jets as these supply the fuel for idle.

found this; Motorcycle/ATV Year Model Identification Identify your year model by using the letter of the alphabet used as the last digit in the units model name. Eg. YZF-R6S S= Year Model Letter = 2004 YZF-R6T T= Year Model Letter = 2005

my old bike chain had a funny noise comming from it.....although it was wrapped round the wifes neck at the time and had some very tight links in it

'74 TX500a Tire Size
I've seen a 120 on an xs400 and you had to cut the chain guard. so it should fit in the swing arm (mm's to spare)

honda
This bloke goes to see his doctor and says, "every time I fart, it sounds like a Honda motorbike." So the doc asks the chap to pull his pants down and bend over. Sure enough, the man farts loudly and its sounds like a Honda motorbike. The doc says, "you've got an abscess up your arse." The bloke says, "surely it can't make my arse make noises like that." The old doctor says, with a cheeky smile, "abscess makes the fart go Honda!"

storm
When I pulled the curtains this morning and looked out, I thought there must have been a terrible storm last night. Fences were laying flat, windows were smashed in, rubbish was strewn all over the place, and the power was out. Then I remembered. I live on a council estate.

chubby brown
I went to see Chubby Brown at the weekend. As soon as he came on stage I started shouting "You fat bastard! You fat bastard!" Then I was told by security that that sort of behaviour wasn't tolerated at the Labour party conference.

Whats going on with the site?
I remember when this site was just fields, FIELDS I say!!! I like the rd aircooled site where you can hover your mouse over the shortened question and get a more detailed (abet still shortened) version, that way if it don't intersest me, I can move on without backtracking all the time. why can't there be a paid "members" section where we could access discounts etc if there are thousands of members then I'm sure sponsors would be interested in paying towards the site plus give a discount to members who shop with them!!

you wil need to get another drain bolt. the new ones have a larger head on them to get a better purchase. I welded another nut on top of the bolt, so with the heat and so forth, the drain bolt undid. coils share a red/white +ve feed and have orange and grey from contacts or TCI (not too sure of tci colours) BTW, clean out the oil strainer by taking off 6 X 6mm bolts under the engine (square alloy thing)
