79 xs400 camshaft oil seal
have you checked the gap between camshaft and head/cover? sounds like they are worn, maybe due to worn oil pump not providing enough pressure!!

1980 XS 400 Wheel & tire?
you can get any thing to fit if you really want it bad. the bigger bikes run 19" on front and 18" on rear I've just put a 3:50 tyre on my flat tracker front and it looks funky chunky!! and on a 1.85 rim

Electrical Shock from XS400
I took the cap off my sparkie to run on 1 cylinder ( for testing) and the bugger zapped me. Me being the easiest way to earth check the caps are screwed on tight and in the HT lead centre. I can touch my leads with the plugs attached and not get a belt.

XS360 blowby?
Tim, I'd check that the breather hose (rear of engine, behind the starter cover) is not kinked or blocked, this releases the pressure from the gearbox/crank area and the cam chain shaft (which goes into the rocker box). If that is clear then you will need to do a pressure test as this would be the easiest thing to do next. let us know how you get on drewps
