hey, they're called ice cream legs, coz girls want to lick them when they're HOT!! its stock wiring which i am taking out all the unessary bits coz I'm running with ignition, brake light and horn and that's it. minimum for the MOT

there was two different types of dohc xs400, 36hp and 45 hp you may have the 36hp one.

81 xs 400 Clutch issue
i'd check the worm gear on the clutch cover is not broken. its only plastic and I'm not sure how you can break a 200lb breaking strain cable unless its rotten!!

started off as kenny roberts modified xs650, then the idea grew from what was around. I get sideburn magazine which captures the spirit of the bikes, and also this..... on the mile long tracks they are on 120mph and 8o round the bends.

I've got the maxxis 3:50 on front and 4.00 on rear. for the flat track look I don't think I could go bigger on the rear check out the end my flat tracker thread in the street bike section for the tyres. bear in mind the bike is slightly raised by 2"

but if you have an earthing issue ie the wire from the switch is earthing out, then you will have the symtoms you describe!! what about the bulb and holder itself? have you checked that (replace bulb in case its an intermittent fault)

XS 400 carb issues
need to strip the carb down (separatly) and if you can, use an ultrasonic bath. don't use lemon juice as it will blacken the alloy and left long enough, will corrode it. you can clean the outside by using baking soda blaster check settings against spec. i'd use 26mm for float height the mains screw into the emulsion tube which when unscrewed( and the diaphram removed) will fall out. there is a location tab to stop them turnig when the main jet is tightened. use a carb cleaner and compressed air to clean drewps
