i'd try the condensor first as that will give you those symptoms. coils over heat due to the electrical build up within the primary coil and acts like an electric bar fire. they need to transfer that energy to the secondary coil and thus into the spark plug.

I'm converting the gilera to 12v using a ducati solid sate stator and cdi/coil ignition from a derbi senda. will need a reg/rectifier and a small battery too. also the horn needs to be dc not ac.

try and check you put it on right, (gaskets etc) and move the main rubber thing around. also check the alloy for trueness
