did it just stop working or after you did something to the bike? There's lots of info over at http://www.carpe-tdm.net

the mk1 has a wasted spark system as opposed to the 4TX have you checked cleaned the connections to the ignitor box? these go green with damp and age? did you check, side stand switch? bypass it just in case its faulty. that'll do for now till you report back

just fix a date and I'll book it in with work, easier now than nearer the time

Just read that and loved it, maily to remind me of NI as I did the NW200 once via Stranrar and the other we copped out and flew there, only to be stranded by the volcano erupting. we also stayed in Bushmills, but with a friend. I cycled the Hadrians wall road west to east and is indeed impressive and particulaly liked Housesteads fort

Have a few mates in Bristol. see if the're up for a ride out too any ideas on dates yet?

its usually the idle jets that get blocked. try opening up the mix screw which is near the manifold (anticlockwise) if it doesn't make a difference then professional cleaning is the way to go. I sent mine away to cornwall which cost £100 and i also sent new jets. this was back in 2006 so more expensive now. look in xs400.com and you can get an xs teeshirt with "clean them carbs", that's how notorious they are to get right
-
yea, sounds like a plan, cheers

thoroughly cleaning carbs with air, is not thoroughly cleaning carbs. they need stripping completely and ultrasonic cleaning and poss replacing pilot jets if blocked. the issue is the galleries are so small, that air won't shift the fuel gunk collected over time

I restored a 400 and have a 400 tracker

geez slice, you don't half pick 'em. Still you're here to tell us and learn (ish) I once had a guy on his phone with a family in the car on the slip road to the motorway, had to bang on his window or I was going to get hit. never saw what he said too busy trying to stay alive and unharmed. Hate motorways, but they have their uses if you need to get somewhere.
