  1. can we change the font to Vote for Tommy - DDT, Slice, Andrew, Foamy, Drewpy ( with new font) Vote for Kevs Noise I would like my cash back
  2. first get a manual. head over to xs400.com for the "paperwork" an '81 could either be the rare dohc bike or the last of the sohc bikes so you need to let me know the first 3 letters/number of the engine. you should have electronic ignition, so everything sounds fine there. Make sure you have the right grade plugs in, then as airhead said, check compression is 155 psi, warm with throttle fully open. could indicate either sticky piston rings or worn bore. another thing is these bikes don't like standing, modern fuel gums up in a month. I'd give it an "italian service" ie give it some beans to clear the engine out!
  3. i done my bit ...and was rejected

my aplogies if there was an issue with the forum at the time. I was out when it hit. We get this all the time and peeps seem to think it fine to multipost thinking they will get more responses
  9. technically, they could prevent you from using the bike there and then. You would have to get it towed away. expensive
  10. can you reset the timing or is it a fixed electronic type?
  11. Gravity sucks! mental, i see they had full brakes on those descents too
  12. 1972 or earlier vehicles can have black and white plates on the road.

just put in new float valves last night. the O ring on the needle body was so loose they fell out. Seems that its not just about the needle seats on these carbs
  15. I would also weld them fixed. some scum stole my shed contents and all they did was prop up the light so it points skywards! good idea about one in the bedroom, although make sure that the cats don't always set it off!
  16. got the touring boots and another pair of Jeans. smaller size this time quite a few bikers in there today.
  17. can you just stick a cork/rubber bung in there temporarily? what about a bike breakers, try and find how many different bikes the part will fit , then ask if they break those bikes
  18. So Sad, condolences to the family and friends he left behind. RIP
  19. prob , just needs a tune and a good thrashing (Italian tune up)

my thoughts too and at only £15 delivered, its worth a punt. did some more rewiring today, trying to use as much of the existing stuff as I can, which is quite a lot might have her running next weekend then I have 3 bikes to choose from

sorted out the dragging clutch, so its much better to ride. I still think it bogs early doors, so I'll try different slow jets
  22. I rode 2 bikes today, first the Gilera ( up and down the gearbox all the time) and it knackered me out so took the tracker out to Rivvington car park Barn for a few hours.and blew away the cobwebs
  23. the carbs on these bikes are really finiky. just leaving them with gas in for longer than a month, causes all sorts of gumming and poor running. you havn't said what itsa like to ride only tick over. the bike needs a good run, not irregular start ups which does no good. do you have an inline fuel filter fitted, is the pet cock free of debris? carb inlets cracked? is it a points model? BTW its not a restored bike, its a modded one
  24. the mag can shear the woodruff and spin on the crank. causing the timing to change

I've found a set on ebay with the same primary resistance (fazer ones) but they have a higher secondary, prob due to the higher compression engine.
