  1. when running with charged battery. you should be getting 14.5 volts + across the battery terminals @ 3k revs. if not, your voltage regulator has gone.

  4. neither 20w 50 i use millars semi synthetic classicsport oil, never use full synthetic as your clutch will slip!!

  6. if you have just rebuilt the motor it could be that it just needs running a bit. The valves need to bed in, I don't think that swopping the camshaft over (temorarily) would do damage unless you miss-timed the valves thus hitting the piston crown. did you use new valves and ground them in or reuse the old but didn't put back into their original place?

  10. are the valve gaps adjusted ie shims etc? if the compression is more than 10% down I suspect you would have to tear down to investigate further.

  13. Goff, which powder coaters in manchester? I could do with a decent one nearby rather than bingley. I tried chicago powder coaters in stalybridge and they were sh!t, and another in broughton who were too expensive.

  16. I think its a case of disconnecting electrical connections, then starting with the ignition switch, turn the key, connect something else, turn the key etc. i would start with the starter motor + solinoid first.
  17. mods should post a "sticky" £30 seems steep when you can get a frame and swing arm powder coated in black for £55 at triple S (inc masking and blasting)

    we need to know what year and model the xs400 is, there are at least 4 variants over the years!!
  22. you have to strip the carbs down. you can do all the jets ans the carbs would have to be turned over. larger more expensive ones you can immerse the whole carb in it
