Braking on the lean
no-one has mentioned Cof G as this affects how the bike behaves and what you can do with it. you can tighten up a bend by leaning low and forward on the side you are turning and the bike will steer that way better. rossi in the GP today was trying out a different approach by kicking his leg out early to set the bike up for the bend. drewps

SR500 no go
try fuel in the bore as well, don't know if you drained the carbs before storage, otherwise its a carb strip and clean!!

xs400 strange chattering noise
the procedure is in the manual which you can get in the sticky that yamagod has posted. for the cam tensioner, you will need to lift the head off and it might be a good idea anyway, so you can check valves, rockers for wear etc oil should be ideally on the top line, but between is ok, are you using the correct grade (20w 40 in usa, 20w/50 in uk) and are you checking AFTER just resting the dip sick ontop of the casing (ie not screwed in!) drewps

xs400 strange chattering noise
not running clean, maybe you have an air leak in the manifold. have you tried spraying wd40 over the inlet sto check for airleaks? checked your valve gaps? could also be tensioner blades for the cam chain

XS650 running badly
screwing out the pilot is richening the mix, so i would say your carbs need cleaning, and not just a squirt of carb cleaner either!! If you have an ultra sonic bath use that, and compressed air to get at the tiny galleries within the carb. drewps

help wanted please
starter clutches are notorious for wearing, especially on a big engine. usually can be done with the engine in situ, but still a pain to do.
-
still having carb issues
sounds lean to me, try richening the pilots out a bit. gas so put a link to a carb tune (its for xs650 but info can be used for all carbs) look under classics and pinned "xs400 links" drewps
