  1. the xs400 carbs need a real good clean as they are old and finicky buggers. try unscewing the pilot mix screw 3.5 turns from bottom, this seems to offset the shite liquid which passes for fuel today! by carb clean I mean stripped down, everything spotless. does look like it has rust in the carbs before the filter fit?, also the float hight needs checking (26mm top of float to under bowl gasket)
  2. sounds expensive http://www.triple-s.co.uk/prices.htm they charge £89 for yours (in black), all threads covered, shotblasted and powder coated!
  3. so now your the bleeding expert! thank god you've now got it sorted
  4. what exactly did you do to the carbs? maybe gas cap air hole blockage? rust in the fuel tank, running an inline filter?
  5. fuel tank could be corroded letting rust dust into the carbs and bocking them. The air hole in the fuel cap could be blocked or the float height is incorrect (haynes is wrong, it should be 26mm not 32mm)
  6. swingarms can be done with the frame and may be free (is at triple s) so its worth getting all your stuff done at the same time, especially if its the same colour
  7. try timing the engine, balancing the carbs.
  8. starter clutch rollers have squared off. i think they are the same as the xs being on the left hand side
  9. its buried in there, you need a special plier to get them out, or grind a nail or two and flick the bugger out. two pairs of hands work better
  10. boom boom boom, everybody say "wayoooh"

  22. does no-one live local who can nip over and help?
  23. PJ1 is the best for engines. Unfortunatly, they stopped doing silver when the factory burnt down. never really found a decent silver, used yambits one and its runs as soon as it see's petrol even after baking it!
  24. you can get textured black paint in cans. Frost do them

    mot - exhaust

unless you get a classic bike, and a peice of plumbers pipe would do, as long as the tester deemed it acceptable noise wise!
