You can tell the year by the first few letters. If you haven`t got an owners manual, post the first few letters up and someone will tell you.

I`ve just done the same, changed my YZF750 for a Thunderace. Its much more comfortable, ideal for touring, has a good torquey motor, good for an actual 165mph. Only downside compared to the YZF750, its a bit heavier and the rear original suspension isn`t very good. Front end is good, as the internals are virtually the same as the R1. Usual problems with Exup valve seizing, and exhaust headers rot, but i replaced mine with a stainless system with no Exup valve, no rejetting, actually improves the mid range a little. Some have problems with running hot and boiling over, easily fixed with a different thermostat or a manual switch for the fans. Most Aces use a lot of oil, though mines fine at the moment. Replacement panels are expensive, even secondhand, especially top fairings. Clutch can be a little grabby, but can be fixed replacing the master cylinder with one from a YZF750. Not everyones cup of tea as some say they look a bit fat and wide, but i`m happy with mine.

There should be an engine number stamped on right hand side of motor. You can find out year etc with this.

Is it a California bike? These have some weird stuff on due to emission laws. Have a look on here, put your model, year etc in, shows the parts diagrams. http://www.partforyamaha.com/pages/parts/v...rand/parts.aspx

Heres the only pic i could find of the Ace bracket.

The other side has the mount hole drilled through the frame spar, it has a collar in the hole and you need to space out the rear to line up the engine so the sprockets line up. Heres the engine fitted, its a tight fit in the frame, i had it totally stripped so was easier to fit the frame over the engine!

I have pics for the FZR1000 motor swap, a mate did the Ace plate mod, i`ll see if i can find any pics of those. Heres the plate for FZR motor. It had nuts welded onto the inside so you use the YZF frame bolt holes.

The Ace engine will fit, the rear engine mounts are the same, but front mount holes on the engine are 10mm higher. You can go two ways, either make up some adaptor plates, or have the frame spars cut off and rewelded 10mm higher, so the engine just drops straight in. If you go with adaptor plates, you have to shave off the thickness of the plates from the engine, so the sprockets line up. The only other issue is the airbox. This also sits 10mm higher, so you either have to mount the tank higher (easiest way) or reshape the Ace airbox. I`m doing this mod on my spare YZF750 frame over the next few months, i`m having the frame spars cut and rewelded. My old YZF750 had a FZR1000 motor in it, this had an adaptor plate on one side, then a hole drilled in the other side for the single engine mount bolt. Again, the airbox was a problem, but i got round it by fitting a pair of K&N filters, but this messes the jetting, so had to fit a stage 3 kit. I`ve got plenty of pics, so let me know if your`e interested in the FZR swap and i`ll show the adaptor plate.

Sold my YZF750 and got a Thunderace. Bought as a bit of a basket case, bought a lot of parts from Ebay, repaired and resprayed most of them! Biggest expense was the stainless headers with no exup valve. Second biggest cost was the paint aerosols from Halfords. Still needs a decent end can, but no hurry now its roadworthy. Heres where is all started And where i`m up to so far.

Idle speed should be around 1500 rpm. I don`t know of another rear light that will fit, unless you change the complete rear tail unit. I`m currently changing my YZF750 tail unit to an R6 rear end.

I presume you have flatside carbs on the SP? If you mean the main bike frame, its only interchangable with another YZF750.

You need to grind out the shape of the calipers from your forks. Like this.................
  16. rf9rider replied to a post in a topic in Naked
Thunderace calipers are different to R1/R6, they are a two piece construction, where as the R1/R6 are a one piece construction, the Ace calipers also have a metal pipe connecting the two halves, and air gets trapped in these making them a pig to bleed. Its also advisable to change the master cylinder as well as the calipers and they are a different bore size, if you use the original 750 master, the brakes can feel "wooden". The 750 lines will fit, although the R1 lines have a different angled banjo end, which isn`t a problem. If you use the original 750 discs, you`ll need to grind off some of the brake pad face, as the rotor bobbins will catch, better off using some brembo 320mm discs as found on early Ducati`s.

I used to have an xs250, the parking light came on when key was turned to the steering lock/park position, and the light switch needed to be on in the sidelight position. Not sure on the MOT side of things, but i cant remember anyone testing this.

Been suggested to me to fit fzr 1000 engine into my yzf 750 project. Before i get carried away with it all, is it a straightforward swap? Are the engine mounts the same, can i use my 750 wiring, ie, coils, cdi unit, exhaust system, radiator,or do i need all the stuff from a fzr? If anyone has done this, please let me know! Thanks chaps. PS, Also been considering a Thunderace engine swap, same questions as above! PPS, Theres nothing wrong with my 750 engine, is it worth all the hassle?

I need a front wheel for my yzf750, been offered a Thundercat wheel, though i notice the brake discs are smaller on the cat compared to my yzf, will it fit with different callipers as i need these too? I was going to use my yzf discs, but the mounting holes are different as well. Will i be better off waiting til a yzf wheel comes up?
