i was bored and decided to check out this forum again. same as always, no interest from anyone on old small vintage bikes. well, i got the girl running, but didn't have 1st or 2nd gear. took the motor back apart and split the cases. gears stripped. found a good set on ebay for 25 bucks, so i replaced all of em(mixed and matched to get the best) and replaced all of the case seal (which fixed my idle problem from another post). took it out for a little spin and i am so glad i decided to keep it and fix it up. first off, my son and i have something to talk about besided cleaning his room or not pissing his mom off somehow. we got to spend some great quality time together and i hope he was able to learn something besides the cuss words when i couldn't get the thing to idle. only bad thing is- he broke his collar bone playing football and can't ride it for a few weeks. we now have another project- a vintage ktm 125 to restore. we rebuilt his quad and i just re did my beater quad. now i want to restore the dt100. it does run great, but looks like crap.

1979 yamaha gt80 wierd problem
does it pick up/rev up when spraying wd-40 or carb spray into the carb? try that, if so, you have something inside cutting fuel flow off. good luck. let us know what you find.

yz80 carb adjustment
figured it out. crank seal blew out sucking air through there.

yz80 carb adjustment
wish i could, but no carbs on them. in fact, i just sold both of them after taking all of the parts off that i thought i could use. just didn't have the room in the garage and didn't want them outside where someone could take them.

yz80 carb adjustment
i have taken the carb apart a few times thinking the same exact thing. it has soaked overnight, torch tip cleaned all ports, sprayed all ports. jets clean as could be. i am at my wits end with this thing.

yz80 carb adjustment
just new top end. piston, pin, bearing, gaskets. bored to 20 over. took carb apart. cleaned out all jets. checked float, etc. all seemed ok, just junk in the bottom of the bowl. slide is nice and free. i thought it was a vacuum leak. when rebuilding, installed new intake gaskets then. made sure bolts were nice a tight. sprayed carb spray all over the place. only place engine changes is when sprayed directly into carb.

yz80 carb adjustment
anyone? please? help? replaced carb to intake "gasket" , tried moving needle adjustment, still will not idle at all. if i cover the carb with my fingers it will idle down, but as soon as i remove them, it "races" up and will not idle down. sprayed carb spray all around the intake and no change, but if i spray into the carb, it does idle down. PLEASE, can someone help me out. my kid is dieing to ride it.

yz80 carb adjustment
i just rebuilt the engine and now need to get the carb tuned in. it is a 78 yz80 with a 73 gt80 engine. it ran good before, but that was with really low compression. now with it rebuilt, it doesn't want to idle without me "choking" it with a finger over the intake. to me it sounds like an air leak. i have new intake gaskets and did find a leak on the gasket inside the carb where it "pinches" around the intake. after sealing it off, it seems a little better. i have tried moving the needle adjustment, but it is still very sluggish when opening the throttle and will not idle down. any suggestions? the carb has been completely gone through, so i know it isn't an internal problem.

1978 yz80
i pretty much all but gave up on this forum. i ran to our local harbor freight tool store and bought a new set of 2 jaw pullers. first one out of the box popped it off like nothing at all. i just needed a new one with longer "teeth" that could get in behind and grab ahold of the hub. doesn't seem to be too many interested in old beater dirt bikes and giving information out on them. i bought a manual and will just finish the project with my son. he really enjoys "working" in the garage. our next project is rebuilding his 4 wheeler. needs a piston too-low compression.

any suggestions on pulling the magneto off. i have a 2 jaw puller, but it doesn't want to budge. i am wanting to replace the points, but can't get to them.

update again. tore it down today. i was not happy with how it was running. compression was low so it spent a whole 10 minutes and ripped the piston out. took it to the bike shop down the road and he measured and checked wear on the cylinder. he felt it was ok with just honing it out and replacing piston and rings, bearing, gaskets, etc. i suggested boring it out, but he rechecked it and said if it was his, he would just re ring it. i ordered a new piston just because i didn't like just reringing it. oh yeah, both rings were broke too. cleaned, cleaned cleaned. going to paint everything tomorrow. now my question to the techs out there. i don't have a manual, what is the head torque? now i have a stupid question-what do you run in the gearbox? the kid at the counter suggested 80wt. gear/trans lube. i drained it out and it had red fluid that resemebled transmission fluid. maybe someone put the wrong stuff in before i picked the bike up. hoping to have all of the parts by this weekend, but not holding my breath. put a new clutch in the dt100. took it out for a little test drive and what a differance. might rebuild it too. little low on compression too, but runs really good. not the most powerfull thing, but still starts with 2 kicks. starts easier than my kx125.

now i think i might have a problem. i just now noticed i do not have the air box/cleaner. is there a resource for a "bolt on" air filter? i tried searching, but haven't come up with anything yet.

just updating progress. ordered new rubber for it, so i took the old ones off. front brakes are in great shape just need a little cable adjustment when i put it back together. took the rear off and the rear brakes were frozed solid. took a little work getting them cleaned up. polished up the rims and they look like almost sorta good. shined up pretty good. took the wire wheel and stripped the rear swing arm and arms down to bare metal. gave them a nice fresh coat of black. tried adjusting the clutch, but i think i need a new lever assembly. way too much play in the lever and shouldered bolt is gone. will pick one up tomorrow.

is the kill switch working/ wire shorted out? i guess i don't quite understand what is going on? are you saying you are not getting any spark? i had to clean and adjust the points. i have it running now. just got the clutch pieces in today. had to put it on hold. wife got really sick over the holidays. i just ordered new nobbies and tubes. should be in wed. need to go through the brakes too, but won't order anything until i check them out. gonna clean the rust out of the tank tomorrow too. getting close.
