I 'almost' get that smell every time the bike fires up. The oil tank is filled with castrol TTS, the tank is filled with sheel v-power and the two stroke engine kicks out a lovely smell .

Wasn't able to take the bike out this weekend and driving along seeing all these bikes out in superb weather gave me the right hump . Knowing my bike was in the garage with a full tank was a little bit like torture!! Must admit I am one of the few drivers who has as much fun in the car. I do loads of track days and go to the Nurburgring lots (something I will NEVER ride a bike on) so it gets a proper seeing to. The bike on the other hand is an older two stroke that needs care and nurturing rather than thrashing everywhere (well, maybe a few places ).

I feel your pain. The 'O' rings on the needle valves in my carbs were letting petrol pass by and the overflow pipes couldn't keep up with the flow and the crankcase completely filled with petrol as well. I lost 16 litres of fuel over the garage floor in total over two days and the outside of the carbs etc was coated in this furry white chrystal like shit. Replaced the needle valve things and it has been perfect since but I was high for around three weeks I took in so much petrol vapour and my wifes aga engined car stunk of petrol for ages as it lives in the garage next to the bike .

I like to give a nod or a thumbs up. I thought an R6 rider was going to have an accident as he went past me giving a nod the other day on the M2. As he went by he nodded then did a double take of the bike so fast he started a mini tank slapper . Don't know if he was thinking, "bloody hell, don't see many of those on the road any more" or "bloody hell, thats an old piece of shit!!" .

Love seeing peoples replies to these kind of questions. I have so many favourites that it would be very hard to choose but my top four in no particular order would have to be: Hey Jude - The Beatles Son of a Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield Creep - Radiohead No Suprises - Radiohead

Was it a Camelot lottery? Did you have to go to Camelot to pick up the winnings. My brother in law works there and sees all the big winners arrive. I take it they have offered you financial advice?

Thanks for the nice comments. I assure you that I paid £450 and it really as good in the metal as it is in the pics. It really is like it was ridden for a year and then put in a time capsule. I guess that is the advantage of buying from a retired bloke who looked after his stuff .

Would love an RD500. Used to have an RG500 which was completely bonkers and I sold it (stupidly) before the thing killed me. RD500s are fetching good money for a straight one so I plumped for my tzr250, still should say four strokes beware on that little bike as it is pretty nippy . Not a big fan of four strokes as my heart is with the stinky little two smokes so I would also have to say either RD500 or the tzr250 3xv SP.

Good luck with the Jawa, looks like the start of a fun adventure!! The man speaks sense. A bigger 2 stroke is huge fun and worthwhile doing while you are still in the mood for tinkering. My TZR250 may not be a reverse cylinder etc but still handles superbly and goes like crap off a very shiny shovel and it has that lovely sound and the smell of castrol TTS being burnt

Thought this might be of some interest to a few on here. Long story turned short!!! Was at the pub with a few mates and was reminiscing with a bloke about the 'good old day' of two strokes etc. Said how I would like another and he says that his dad has one. Now remember I am less than sober at the moment, so I ask a few questions, the most important, what is it? HE responds it is a mint TZR250 'H' reg and he would possibly sell. So I say I will buy it . Next day I get a text to say he will sell to me. Go see the bike and it is superb. Talk money and offer £450 and can't believe it when he accepts . Bike was SORN'd and had no MOT so I had to get that sorted and to be fair you never know if you are buying a pup even if the bodywork is shiny. Apart from a non working powervalve and vomitting carbs (all now sorted) she was spot on. Just need to change the gearbox oil, replace tyres and replace pads and disks to bring her up to A1 standard. Here is my girl . The photos with my kids on the bike was the day I brought it home.

NICE bike!!! Wouldn't mind one to compliment my tzr250 some day.

Is the air vent hose thingy blocked coming from the tank? Try riding the bike with the fuel cap loose or removed (just for testing) and see if you are able to run it for a decent length of time.

Withdrawl syptoms have been cured. Just taken the old girl for a 50 mile ride. Bloomin 'ell, for a little 250 2 smoke she bloody well flies, forgot how quick it can go when you peg it flat out through the gears and boy does it handle sweet. Lovely sunny and dry day down here in Kent but still a bit of road crap on her so will get a lovely scrub at the weekend.

In the first year of a cars life most reputable insurance companies will replace with brand new if written off. Is this not the case with motorcycle insurance? Certainly decline the first offer, robbin barstewards .

If you can afford the insurance then a BMW E30 318is would be fabulous. Often referred to as the mini M3. Superb handling, good strong 1.8 16v engine and reliability. If insurance is too much on one then try the standard E30 318i. One like this .

Haven't been out on mine since beginning december. It is 18 years old now but mint and I don't want to take it out in the salt and crap that is littering the roads. She deserves a decent life in her older years!! Really want to take a spin on it though.

Most decent bikes will give a quick car a run for their money and generally win in a straight sprint. I have a BMW M3 and my little old TZR250 feels quicker from the off but at 60mph the M3 will start pulling and then completely destroy the bike as the acceleration is relentless. There are so many factors involved if you get into 'chases'. Was the car driver really trying is the main one. I might have a muck about with the odd bike in the car but I won't go into silly figures. So, does the bike claim victory due to my lack of balls (or wanting to keep my license and not kill anyone). At the nurburgring I pass pretty much every bike that goes out but on the fast straights they sail passed me even though I am giving the car everything but in the corners they just can't compete - unless of course they have some kind of racing experiance, but in the main they are just your normal joe public wanting some fun on the track much like on the road.

My lovely old TZR250 was 18 on november 1st so I treat her gently as she is still on her first bore and mint. Makes me a bloody boring old sod to be honest but I just enjoy riding the bike within my limits which is erm, limited so I generally stick to the speed limits. Anyway lets face it, she may nippy in a short sprint but anything over 100 and I am likely to sieze the bloomin engine!! I go to the Nurburgring a fair bit in the car so I am the opposite way round from most on here I guess. Utterly rape the car and treat my lovely bike with loads of care.

Joined up a little while back so though I should say hello. Have a 1990 TZR250 2MA that is absolutely as it left the factory. Got it end of october last year for £450 . Had 18500 miles and now around 18700 (nasty weather so little riding). Had to replace the carbs needles due to it vommitting all its fuel onto the garage floor and filling the crankcase full of the stuff and the YPVS control unit as the powervalves weren't functioning. Need to do a few little jobs like replace the ugly mirrors and sort out a broken indicator but other than that she is in very rude health . Here it is.
