hi, ive got a 1981 dt175mx and i dont think they seperate but they come off of the plate, thats what holds them together, the plastic case comes off the back plate and the mechs are attached to the back (i think, i know the shell comes off cause at 30mph on a bumby track mine came off )

my stepdad, and mum (who by the way were both very into bikes) tell storys of how they used to make gaskets out of cerial boxes lol! and i had to make one for my dt175 and it worked fine lol!
