Problems with 1988 Austin Mini
the electrics on vehicles this age can be prone to being a bit dodgey at best, check your plugs underneath the dashboard where the stalks plug in to, all you can do from there is trace it back

Getting pissed off with SMIDSY's

fitting electrics
depends if your bike has an existing electrical system with a battery and alternator windings (at that age, it will probably just be a kick-start with a coil running directly from the magneto). adding the lights wouldnt be difficult, you would just need to add switchgear to the handlebars, make some new mounts for your lights and make a wiring loom to connect it all together with a 12v battery, only major problem is finding a reliable way to charge that battery

Lasted about a week
nah would ya fuck, turn the tap to the off position (if its vac operated then dont bother, the fuel line wont be open unless the engine is trying to draw fuel), and disconnect the fuel feed pipe from the tap to the carb, if it weeps a little bit just stick something up the end of the pipe. tanks off, seat will be a couple of bolts, cheers easy (Y), if you fancy a trip to the 'shire im here for the next 2 weeks with my thumb up my ass, bring it over

handlebars of when drivin straight
will try and find a diagram of what i mean, but you need to take the stress out of the triple trees, loosen the bolts that hold the forks into the yokes and get a mate to hold the front wheel straight whilst you move the handlebars, retighten the bolts when you are satisfied they wheels and bars are in line happened to my DT50 when i binned it, tweak it until it feels right, if it has adverse handling after that it may be bent stanchions, best way to test them is mount them in a lathe and run a dial test indicator around the furthest end from the chuck

Lasted about a week
disconnect the original cable, tape one end of the new cable to the end of the old cable and gently pull it through, as the old cable is pulled out it should pull the new cable in, i have no idea if it would work in practice but its worth a try... ... just a thought, i have brilliant ideas when im hungover

ooops.
need to get my fireblade on the road, ive been sliding around in the kia for almost a year now, i miss bikes :'(. not even going to entertain the idea of working on the turbo until the weather gets into atleast double digits...

Chains not lasting
It depends, my DT50 was using split link chains (used to change them 9-months to a year) but my 900 fireblade and XJ600 used riveted chains, the key to keeping any chain good is to keep it clean and lubed, any grit that the chain picks up will stick to the oil and form a viscous paste that wears the chain faster, only way to combat this is to wipe it off and clean it/ if you can, remove the chain and wash it with isopro alcohol, dry it off and relubricate with chain oil,

Negative Attitude to Bikes
some people ive met have been almost happy to see the bike (one old chap came to talk to me in tescos car park, about how he once had the same slogan "my other toy has tits" on his numberplate some 20 years ago). as a general rule, if someone wants to enter into an intellectual debate about bikes/v/cars e.t.c then i will reply in an intellectual manner, if they are being a dick about it, i tell them to eat shit

Xj600 running problems
Check the condition and colour of your spark plugs, my XJ600 used to be very picky about its fueling, a good mixture should be a dark chocolatey brown, also check the rubber gators that go between the carbs and engine head (chances are these are perished and they are more rare than rocking horse sh*t with hens teeth in it) also, make sure your exhaust is in good condition, it may sound stupid but it makes a hell of a difference to these little bikes when they have the right backpressure

Dumb shit I've done since getting my bike
left the keys in the ignition plenty of times, tried to start my old DT50 with the killswitch set to 'off' (got no end of piss-taking from my peers) left my heated grips on overnight and killed the battery, changed the oil in the engine without first putting the sump plug back in taken the clutch casing off my DT without realising that it had oil behind it (10 mile walk to the nearest place that sold oil), changed the front and rear sprockets and forgot to put the chain on, left the two-stroke tank pipe off after rebuilding the DTs top end, put the carburettor slide in backwards, stopped at traffic lights with a load of mates on peds, bike in 1st with the clutch in, i sneezed in my helmet and dropped the clutch by accident, bike stalled, lights turn green and everyone else roars off laughing. put the fuel tap to reserve instead of on, ran out of petrol in the middle of nowhere. aswell as many others i cant remember right now, we all fuck up from time to time
