  3. Have you considered the likes of the Shadow and Suzuki's 800 range? Vastly inferior to anything made by Yamaha, *of course*, but perhaps still worth considering? Some of the M800 stylings look rather cool and spacey... You also have the lesser-seen Yamahas too, like the Road Star and the Warrior... Also, Victory bikes are pretty large-engined, yet the overall bikes seem surprisingly insubstantial. One of the guys at work has an 8-Ball I think (or it began life as one, anyway), which I thought was a 3-digit engine but is something like a 1600!

Worth dropping a line to local scrappies (vehicular and otherwise) to be on the look out, especially if your bike has Datatagging or similar kind of watermarking on the mirrors and/or other parts. Make sure it's your bike they've nicked the parts off, before you let the bat converse though, yeh!!!

If that's how it is, you might want to give the 950 Bolt a try - All the styling of the 883, but performance comparable to the 1200, if the reviewers are being honest about it. The Harleys would be an investment, as they hold their value... but might well eat up any future profits in the cost of parts. Vmax - Try one out, if you can. You might like them. Lots of variety between models, it seems. I understand the imports have more kick to them. One of the guys round our way just picked one up and the specs were notably higher, on the page at least. 1100 Drag - Grown up version of the 650. Notably higher performance, but still a Dragstar. Might be even better after you mod it. Usual known issues apply. Couple of guys round here have them as daily commuter rides. Wildstar - Not that many about, but very well liked by their owners. Big, heavy, massively grunty torquey things. Sound great. Perhaps wouldn't mind one myself. VN1500 - Lots of curly girly Classic styling. Change it immediately, for God's sake!! As always, just my own thoughts. Your experience may differ.

  13. Pad changes? Couple of hundred, I expect. Caliper rebuilds? 20 or so that I remember. More that I don't.
  14. Phone Yamaha, then, as their Workshop Manual says to do exactly this, stating that it makes it easier to move the pistons back (while also stressing it be done gently to avoid spillage).

  16. It didn't make a difference in your case. I understand and accept that. And yeah, I probably am who you think I am. Oh well, eh! Regardless, it may well make a difference in other cases, which was the original point. Degloving and avulsion in general is basically a far more severe form of abrasion, which leathers are generally intended to help protect against, so I personally favour protective kit and advocate it whenever the topic arises. I respect other people's choices, so long as they appreciate the risks and my opinions on their choices are simply just that.
  17. I do understand. But as Lalla said, however it could help, it's always that tiny extra chance to survive. In the one off I had without leathers, my trousers ripped and caught on the fuel tap - If leathers had helped me slide out from under the bike, I know which I'd rather have had.
  18. Those I've seen or heard about usually resulted from being trapped under the bike.
  19. My apologies for naming you. It was not intended to make a bad example of your character. Merely to highlight both the dangers of clothing choice and the acceptance of that risk (the latter of which I actually applaud). Much of the bad sentiment is directed toward those who ride in nothing but shorts and sandals, who DO then complain when they get skinned up. FWIW, the deglovements I've since encountered did involve clothing riding up, which is probably why I thought yours was as well.
  20. I have used a couple, yes. Not my kind of thing, either, but I liked the idea. Basically unpick backwards and use the spinner to flip it past the shear. Managed it less often that I hoped. Same thing with the pick guns. I just couldn't get the hang of my mechanical one and couldn't justify the electric ones! But yes, I have several toolboxes full of 'stuff'!!
  21. Not a fan of bump keys. They're ingenious and I love using them, but at the same time they make things far too easy for the wrong'uns. All that said, even with the best locks in the world, most crims and scrotes will look for easier ways in and likely just smash yer window while you're out or something. Why spend years developing the sensitivity and learning to carefully pick a lock when a brick and five minutes earns you a TV, PC and so on, eh!
  22. We probably met at one stage, I expect. I used to go on UKBF occasionally, a few years ago and I was friends with some of the blokes on there. You ever go up to the 3Bs or Fox's meets? What do you mean by 'judgements', though? IIRC, you yourself later said something in a thread about knowing the risks of riding in jeans and accepting that risk? My apologies, though this was quite a few years ago and I obviously haven't remembered the *exact* details (I'd heard it was a 4x4, not a van). I remember DP or maybe Ace telling us about it at the time, so most of what came through was third hand anyway. Glad to hear you're back on 2 wheels. But the salient point from all that - It was the first time I'd heard about degloving and that part certainly stuck in my head. I never rode in anything but full leathers after that.
