I don't recall having to remove the carbs for valve clearances... just the damn annoying plasti-chrome things!
Anything that makes more space for access will make it easier, though. I heard that it's fairly easy to unbolt and drop the engine out instead, which means lots of space topside.
BTW, this *is* simple home maintenance. Just on an old bike with some 'challenging' design features!!
The other version involves taking your bike to a pro garage and watching while they plug it into a computer and start doing things with specialist software over a "3G comnet Telnet wireless CGI 440 connection to LAN 91 CDM Power Commander interface running 820 megabytes of DPI down an unobtainium adamantium alloy cable", before they can even adjust the frickin' wing mirror!!
