  1. To get what sorted? You haven't stated a problem, just symptoms. Your going to need to get dirty with spanners on this, or you may as well give a stealer er, dealer a blank cheque because they will just start at the ignition switch and start replacing things. You need to narrow it down at the very least, is it exact rpm? can you make it happen? Pothole? Only turning left? Only happens in 3rd gear with your pants down? who knows. But every solid fact will point you to the culprit. That may well just be a lose connector for the ig switch. The info you have given so far will get you ripped off, fact.

Just quessing here but seeing as the 'normal' XT uses a dual stage 27mm tekai carb, I would think your bike with it having a whopping great chunk of hp cut, like 15 or 20 kw. That the easiest way to neutralise the power would be to use a single carb, or de activate the second stage. That is an awful lot of power to lose from a cdi, all that can really to is change the ig some and clip peak rpm, neither really restrict a big single. So that's unlikely. For a really small market model in 1987 Yamaha would not have bothered themselves with developing a different engine/cylinder head. But stopping the second stage (just like blanking a powervalve on a 2 stroke) and some exhaust/inlet restrictors would be really easy. I may be miles off, but its where I would start.

Speak for yourself, none of mine start with a button, (I can say that cos the Hondas lazy button don't work).
  4. A revelation , people need to know, twist it further to go faster. Who knew? Sarcasm aside, shifting your grip on the throttle to get it fully open without your wrist at an uncomfortable angle is normal.
  5. Just a quick follow up, got the car home, wash and hover out showed nothing untoward. Confirmed the engine noises were no more than the alternator. My mate did me a full service and mot, that was 2 track rod ends and the front anti rollbar bushes, reline the rear drums oil and filter. Not bad at all for 142000 miles. So all in with taxing it squared away ready to run, fully checked over and serviced by a mechanic I trust (not many of those) , 620 quid. And that's including the 300quid to buy it in the first place. currently with the wife settling in to it (her driving style is not efficient) its doing 60mpg, AVERAGE. I can see 70+, possibly more on a proper run. From basically an old nail. Comfy too. I'm calling that a result. Its weird to drive though, its a really small car, actually smaller than a clio but has so much space inside you allow yourself too much room on the road. Its really quite odd.
  6. Too right, had a chain snap on my little dt50 when I was 16. Locked the rear wheel at nearly 50, broke the engine case, ruined my boots and a new pair of jeans and completely shagged the rear tyre. Thankfully the boots my mates took the piss out of took the worst of it leaving me with cuts and bruises. Don't underestimate the chain.
  7. Only issue with your plan is the big motor may well be taller, if so the mounts on the frame need moving which is serious work to do when a bike is finished. Your dad may have a stroked motor so the size is ok but if its a 750 with 1000 barrels it may be a bit taller, with it being a tribute bike the engine details may only exist in your dads head. I would prob stick with the 750. Keep the hybrid for a follow up.
  8. Kin ell, it wasn't inspired by the film it was in the film, with your Dad in the film. That's some pretty heavy family kudos. So did your dad get splatted by max in the film. Might have to watch it again. hmmm
  9. Oh why oh why does karma not kick the arse of idiots like that more often. More please.... I'm giving this to the union man at work, were going through the pay deal atm.
  10. Ah. So were talking 750 with the thou top end in a yzf frame with an R1 front end. Interesting, the forks will go in without any real headaches, motor mounts will be an issue and shoving something into the rear end to balance the look of the front will get you thinking. Just remember the MOST important forum rule with things like this. PICTURES, lots and lots and then a few more PICTURES
  11. Welcome to the forum it sounds and interesting idea. 1040 hybrid of? Whats the big bit in the middle, yzf 750, r1, zed? What direction are you struggling with. Bike or forum?
  12. Ah, well you didn't mention fitting it on the rear of a divvy 900 did you. The blue spots are a straight swap to a lot of bikes, like the 600's and the TDR/TZR 250's (although you need to change the mc) not all granted, but 100mm centres is very common across the yam middleweight range. You might also consider, forum etiquette here is to post an introduction. Members are extremely cautious of answering first post questions because of the above. Just to say hi, what bikes you have etc. Not your life story, just enough to break the ice. Otherwise you may get very few responses.
  13. Yep, know the ones your talking about. Seize riding by the chippy. Your problem is that it may not be a 600 caliper. That caliper is on several bikes but with slightly different pistons. It was also fitted to 400's as well as the TDR and TZR again with different diameter pistons in each bike. Me? Junk em and fit a pair of blue spots. Unless you can accurately measure the piston and bore, then try someone like fowlers and see if they can help. They are pretty good that way in my experience.
  14. You better believe it, the ebayers are getting to know what swaps these days too. Like the sr125 switchgear is the same as the rd 350/500 ypvs. One sells for maybe 20 quid the other for £££. Guess which they advertise it as.
  15. do it yourself unless you have won the lottery. You are talking serious cash to lovingly restore a 350. If it ran 4 years ago, buy a manual and some tools (Christmas is coming) and clean her up yourself. Much cheaper, MUCH MUCH cheaper.

    FZ07 to R6 or R1

Any of the modern bikes are twist and power, even the 600's. You need to turn the clock back with your attitude, go buy a streetfighters magazine. In the back will be many proper powerful bikes. Stuff that needs a big hairy pair like 1400 bandit (big bored oil pumpers not the water cooled imitation) with 250+ rear wheel horsepower, that (on a fairly straight road) will scare even the most hardend horsepower junkie. Debating between an r6 or an r1 when you have the fz7 while talking about 12 o'clock wheelies, its borderline spam. Might want speed dial set for 999 though.
  17. What does the v strom have to do with it, anything with wheels is welcome. Been all sorts turn up at squires, Aprilia, Honda, Triumph, Suzuki, Kwak from 125 to 1000cc all been yoc members too.
  18. Just picked up what seems to be a right bargain. Went looking for a car for the missus on Sat and looked at so much 'mint', 'one careful owner' garbage we were a bit flat when we started the puter up Sun for another search. There she appeared, 5 miles away, for peanuts. After all the crap we looked at I called the seller, could be a diamond in the dirt?. It was cheap because the mot was up and the alternator was toast. Have a Nissan alternator, (same) and my mate could get Fred Flintstones car through an mot for a pint and 20 smokes so I grabbed a tidy little 2006 Renault 1500 turbo diesel, with service history for........ 300 quid. AND the missus is chuffed, its even £30 road tax. Result
  19. Everybody, and I do mean everybody who has ever rebuilt a bike hits a point where they run out of steam or hit a problem they either don't know how or cannot afford to fix. That is part of the challenge, either throwing a sheet over it while you save a few bob to pay for the flame ejectors for the handlebars or you find that the mk1 xt uses the same parts (hypothetical example). Giving up is daft, although my mate has managed to retire early buying these up and finishing them for a profit as he gets them for relative peanuts. You have already spent the money but as bits it has no value, even finished its only value is to you. Either piece of mind like my daughters bike that I rebuilt. Knowing its safe is important to me obviously, and my old dt. Big lump of sentimental there. I have my dads old cb175 to do next, all cosmetic, easy peasy compared to some. Easy to find the parts I want and its in good condition anyway if a naff non original colour. Selling is a mugs move.
  20. Nah, 'scavenging' for answers..
  21. A 2 line question without preamble is unlikely to get much of a response. Say hi properly in the new members area and then start a thread in the workshop area. Otherwise this may well come to nothing.
  22. Its prob the bulb check when in neutral.
  23. Did you replace it with a sealed bearing?
