  1. UPDATE: Bike is Fixed ! Started out this morning to check all the wiring to see if I could find a broken wire or something unplugged. Pulled the headlight and checked all the connections that are inside the headlight housing. Everything looked good but I unpluged and replugged everything in there. Then just for grins I stuck the key in and turned it on. Still nothing, then while wiggleing the key around it suddenly made contact and everthing was working again. I had dash lights and the bike would crank over,,,, then as just as quick it stopped working again. This got me thinking that something wasn't right with the ignition switch. I removed the ignition switch and took it apart. What I found is that one of the three wires that connects to a contact inside the switch had come undone. There was a big blob of solder on it, but it wasnt' actually connected, it was just lying on the contact. I pulled out the soldering gun and resoldered the connection and put everything back together. Now everything is working fine, the bike started right up and everything electrical is working fine. My guess is that that connection was never connected very well and the vibration over the years just made it come apart. But best of all, I found the problem rather quickly, and it was an easy fix and it cost me nothing ! I'm very happy to have it back on the road !
  2. Yes there is power on both sides of the main fuse. And the handlebar stop switch is on. But I suppost it could be bad or shorted out. I will check that switch and check all other wiring to see if I can find any broken wires or plugs that may have come unplugged.
  3. The Main fuse is the only place that there IS power. This is the fuse in the fusebox, but is there also something like a fusable link somewhere else on the bike ?
  4. I have an 82 XS400-rj Seca I started out for a ride today, got about 2 miles from home and the bike started sputtering and then just shut down. Pulled off the road an started trying to diagnose the problem. First thing I noticed is that there is no electrical power to anything. Turn the key on and no headlight, no neutral indicator light, no horn, and bike wont crank. Any ideas where to start looking ? Or has anyone had this problem before that might know where to start ? I know from messing with a test light that the battery has power and that the 'Main fuse" has power getting to it. All the other fuses have no power getting to them with the key on or off. I'm thinking starter solenoid just because there is a red wire with a white strip comming out of the solenoid that goes to the "ignition" fuse and this wire is dead even with the key on Any ideas would help,, Thanks
  5. I just bought a National Cycyle - Plexifairing GT Got a smokin deal off ebay, this windshield sells for around $170 to $190 dollars depending on where your shopping. I got a brand new one, that has a few scratches down by where my right hand would be, and paid $97.00 with free shipping. I dont care about a few scratches, just so the windshield is functional and scratches aren't in my field of view. I'm posting a pic from the National Cycle website of the plexifairing GT. I should have mine in a couple days, and i'll post pics when I get it mounted on my XS400 Seca !
  6. Flutterball, thanks for the ebay number, I checked it out. Looks good for the price, but i'm looking for something thats a little wider and will help block the wind going up my jacket sleeves, and wind on my hands in general. Winter riding can be a little rough if you cant stop the wind going up your sleeves, and down the front of your jacket by your neck. I'll try to find a pic of the type i'm looking for.
  7. Found the answer, another member sent me a link to a pdf of the xs360/xs400 manual. it shows: 20W/40 if the average temperature is above 40 degrees farenheight 10W/30 if the average temerature is below 59 degrees farenheight
  8. Only had my bike for a short while, got it running good and have been putting lots of miles on it. So i'm guessing its due for an oil change, but I really have no idea what weight of oil its suppost to have. Any one got clue ?
  9. I'm looking to get a windshield for my 82 Seca400. Just wondering what you guys are using on your older Yamaha's Lets hear your experiences, good or bad. I've been looking at the Plexifairing 3, The Plexifairing GT, and some of the windshields from Memphis Shades. I use my bike for commuting to work and I ride year round (except for rain and snow days). I need the protection of some kind of windscreen. Thanks Guys ! p.s. heres a pic of my bike
  10. Thanks Bill, I'll give that a try ! I was wondering if there wasn't some kind of electrical thing going on, since i've cleaned the carbs twice, and because this problem started all of a sudden. The dirt in the carbs i'm sure took some time to accumulate.
  11. I recently purchased a 1982 XS 400 SECA. Ran ok for a couple weeks, then started to have the following problem. Jumped on it one morning to head for work, got about 3 blocks and seemed to have trouble keeping it running below 2500rpm. It finally stalled out and wouldn't restart. Pushed it home. After about 1 hour it started up fine, took it for a ride,, it did the same thing. I runs ok at first, but then starts having trouble running at low rpm and will bog down and eventually die, then wont restart till you let it set an hour. Seemed like a carb problem, So I pulled the carbs off, tore them completely down, they were full of rusty looking crud that had made its way into the carbs from the gastank. I cleaned everything with carb cleaner, got all the crud out. Reassembled the carbs and reinstalled. Well the bike runs better than when I first got it, especially when your getting on it hard, it runs great. But like before, it runs fine when you first start it, ride a little ways, and it starts having trouble running at low rpm, starts bogging down like its really rich, then will die. Just a note, when I first started to tear into it, I noticed that the air cleaner was soaked in gasoline. Any way, i've changed out the spark plugs, I've pulled the carbs off a second time and went completely through them again, everything was clean and looked ok, I cleaned out the gas tank, checked out the vacumme thingy in the petcock, and replaced the fuel filter. So, take it for a ride !,,, Does the same thing, not quite as quickly, but it will still start bogging down when you stop for a light or stopsign, and it will start to bog down unless you keep it revved up above 2000 to 2500 rpm. I'm stumped ? Any ideas ? Any idea where I could get some tuning information for the Mikuni carbs ? Or a service manual for this bike ? I really need to get this thing running, I bought it to commute to work so I could save gas, instead of driving my truck. Thanks Scott
